What is an imaging services manager?

Imaging Services Managers are healthcare professionals responsible for overseeing the daily operations of medical imaging departments, such as radiology or diagnostic imaging. They manage staff, ensure compliance with safety and quality standards, coordinate scheduling, and oversee budgeting for imaging services. Additionally, they work to improve workflow efficiency, implement new technologies, and ensure excellent patient care within imaging services. Their role is crucial in maintaining high standards and efficient operation within imaging facilities.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an imaging services manager?

Imaging Services Managers need a solid background in radiology or medical imaging, a relevant bachelor's degree (often in radiologic technology or healthcare administration), and ARRT or similar certification. Familiarity with imaging equipment, PACS/RIS systems, and regulatory compliance standards is typically required. Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills help manage teams and ensure smooth departmental operations. These skills are vital to maintain high-quality imaging services, ensure patient safety, and support operational efficiency in a healthcare environment.

What challenges do imaging services managers face when overseeing a multidisciplinary imaging team?

Imaging Services Managers often encounter challenges related to coordinating workflows between different imaging modalities, such as MRI, CT, and X-ray, while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and accreditation standards. They must balance staffing needs, manage equipment maintenance schedules, and address varying levels of staff expertise. Effective communication and collaboration with radiologists, technologists, and administrative staff are essential for resolving workflow bottlenecks and maintaining high-quality patient care.

Job description

Job description:

Position Summary
The Lead Sonographer / Imaging Services Manager is a senior clinical and operational role responsible for building, managing, and continuously improving Be Well's imaging program across all locations. This role is equally hands-on and strategic. You will perform studies yourself when needed, develop and lead the imaging team, work directly with our providers and specialist partners, and ensure quality, throughput, and patient experience all meet the Be Well standard. You will also work closely with the billing team, using your working knowledge of imaging CPT and diagnosis codes to ensure clean and accurate reimbursement.

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced sonographer with leadership ambition to step into a lead role at a high-growth, physician-owned practice. You will not just be filling a position. You will be building a department.

What You Will Be Responsible For

Program Leadership

  • Build and own the imaging services program across all seven Be Well locations
  • Establish policies, protocols, and quality standards for all imaging modalities performed at Be Well
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for imaging-related questions from providers, leadership, and specialist partners
  • Collaborate with our cardiologist and vascular surgery reading partners to ensure diagnostic studies meet reporting and quality expectations
  • Support the integration of imaging services into our Elite Physical workflow and patient intake process
  • Play an active role in evaluating and launching new imaging service lines as Be Well grows, with mobile mammography as a near-term area of focus

Team Development

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and retain imaging technologists as volume and locations scale
  • Build and manage the scheduling model across sites
  • Train new and existing team members on Be Well protocols, documentation standards, and patient interaction expectations
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide direct, constructive feedback
  • Cover scans as needed when team coverage requires it

Current Modalities and Scope

  • Screening ultrasounds: carotid duplex, partial ECHO (limited cardiac), and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
  • Diagnostic studies: full ECHO and comprehensive vascular diagnostics ordered by Be Well providers
  • Additional imaging modalities will be added over time in alignment with clinical need and strategic growth

Billing and Documentation Integrity

  • Work closely with the billing team, using your working knowledge of imaging CPT and diagnosis codes to ensure clean and accurate reimbursement
  • Ensure studies are performed and documented in a manner that supports accurate, complete, and compliant billing
  • Collaborate with the billing team to resolve documentation gaps, coding questions, or claim issues related to imaging
  • Train and educate the imaging team on documentation standards that directly affect reimbursement
  • Flag patterns or issues that could create billing risk and work proactively with leadership to address them

Operational and Financial Accountability

  • Track volume, turnaround times, quality metrics, and team productivity across sites
  • Identify opportunities to expand imaging service lines in alignment with provider demand
  • Work with leadership to evaluate equipment needs, vendor relationships, and cost management
  • Contribute to the business case and operational planning for new imaging services as they are introduced

What We Are Looking For

Required

  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) with vascular specialty
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) credential
  • Minimum five years of clinical ultrasound experience with meaningful vascular and cardiac exposure
  • Demonstrated experience in at least one leadership or supervisory capacity (lead tech, supervisor, trainer, or similar)
  • Proficiency in carotid duplex, AAA screening, partial and full ECHO, and vascular diagnostics
  • Working knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding for ultrasound and diagnostic imaging services — you do not need to be a biller, but you need to understand how what you do in the room connects to what gets paid
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively alongside physicians, specialist partners, and administrative staff
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, multi-site environment where things are still being built

Preferred

  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS or RDCS) credential
  • Familiarity with or interest in mobile mammography and other emerging outpatient imaging services
  • Experience in an outpatient or primary care setting
  • Familiarity with eClinicalWorks or similar EHR platforms
  • Experience building or expanding an imaging program
