What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ICP MS analyst?

To thrive as an ICP-MS Analyst, you need a solid background in analytical chemistry, laboratory techniques, and a relevant science degree such as chemistry or environmental science. Familiarity with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrumentation, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and relevant safety certifications is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate trace metal analysis, reliable data interpretation, and adherence to laboratory quality standards.

What is an ICP MS analyst?

ICP-MS Analysts are professionals who specialize in operating Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) instruments. They are responsible for preparing samples, running analyses to detect and quantify trace elements, and interpreting results for various applications such as environmental testing, food safety, and clinical research. These analysts ensure instrument calibration, maintain strict quality control, and often report findings to scientists or regulatory agencies. The role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of laboratory safety protocols.

What are some common challenges faced by an ICP MS analyst in maintaining instrument accuracy and reliability?

One of the primary challenges for an ICP-MS Analyst is ensuring the instrument's accuracy and reliability, which involves regular calibration, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting unexpected issues such as matrix interferences or drift. Analysts must carefully prepare samples and standards to avoid contamination, and they often need to interpret complex data to distinguish between true sample signals and background noise. Additionally, keeping up with evolving quality control guidelines and documentation requirements is essential to comply with industry standards and audits. Effective collaboration with lab technicians and chemists can help address these challenges and maintain high data quality.

Job Description

The Quality Control Laboratory Technician supports testing, inspection, and quality assurance activities in an advanced chemical manufacturing environment. In this role, you evaluate raw materials, in-process production samples, and finished products to verify compliance with established quality standards. You generate accurate laboratory data, operate analytical instruments, support investigations, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance product quality and process reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory testing and quality inspections on raw materials, in-process production samples, and finished products to ensure they meet defined specifications.
  • Conduct analytical testing such as viscosity, solids content, density, moisture, conductivity, particle size, and other material performance evaluations.
  • Operate analytical instrumentation, including Gas Chromatography (GC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), ICP-OES or ICP-MS, UV-Visible spectroscopy, particle size analyzers, rheometers, viscometers, moisture analyzers, and conductivity and pH meters.
  • Collect, label, and prepare samples in accordance with established testing procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality requirements.
  • Record test data accurately, analyze results, and clearly communicate findings to production, engineering, and quality teams.
  • Verify compliance with product specifications, identify non-conforming materials or processes, and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Perform routine calibration, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment to ensure reliable and consistent performance.
  • Support root cause investigations and corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) related to quality deviations, customer complaints, or process nonconformities.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives focused on enhancing product quality, reducing variability, and improving laboratory efficiency.
  • Maintain complete and accurate laboratory documentation, test records, and logs in alignment with quality system requirements and audit expectations.
  • Follow and help improve laboratory SOPs, quality procedures, and safe laboratory practices.
  • Promote and maintain a safe, organized, and audit-ready laboratory environment, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.
  • Collaborate closely with Production, Engineering, and Quality teams to support troubleshooting, scale-up activities, and continuous improvement projects.

Essential Skills

  • Associate degree or higher in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Technology, Laboratory Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in a laboratory, quality control, materials testing, chemical processing, or manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience operating laboratory instrumentation such as GC, HPLC, ICP-OES or ICP-MS, UV-Visible spectroscopy, particle size analyzers, rheometers, viscometers, moisture analyzers, and conductivity and pH meters.
  • Proven ability to interpret analytical test results and assess conformance to specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accurate technical documentation and data integrity.
  • Solid data analysis skills, including the ability to evaluate trends and identify anomalies in test results.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while effectively collaborating with Production, Engineering, and Quality teams.
  • Knowledge of SOPs, quality systems, and safe laboratory practices.
  • Experience performing wet chemistry and chemical analysis in a production or quality control setting.
  • Ability to work 3rd shift (8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.) on a rotating 3-on/4-off, 4-on/3-off schedule.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in chemical manufacturing, battery materials, conductive slurries, specialty chemicals, coatings, adhesives, polymers, or advanced materials.
  • Experience in material characterization, including purity analysis, contaminant testing, and solvent analysis.
  • Exposure to root cause analysis, CAPA programs, supplier quality, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, IATF, or other regulated quality management systems.
  • Experience working in environments such as battery, chemical, coatings, specialty materials, semiconductor, or industrial manufacturing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to support process troubleshooting in a production setting.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to clearly document and share laboratory findings.
  • Motivation to grow with a rapidly expanding organization and take on increasing responsibility over time.

Work Environment

You will work in a controlled laboratory environment within a chemical manufacturing facility. The role involves regular use of analytical instruments such as GC, HPLC, ICP-OES or ICP-MS, UV-Visible spectrometers, particle size analyzers, rheometers, viscometers, moisture analyzers, and conductivity and pH meters. The schedule is a 3rd shift, 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., on a rotating 3-on/4-off and 4-on/3-off pattern. The setting includes exposure to chemical processes and materials, and the position may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including a respirator, as appropriate for specific tasks and areas.
