Do you enjoy working outdoors, staying active, and making a visible impact in your community? Are you someone who takes pride in keeping parks beautiful, streets safe, and public spaces welcoming? If so, we'd love to have you join our team as Public Works Maintenance Laborer!
As Public Works Maintenance, you'll help maintain the City's streets, parks, athletic fields, public facilities, and infrastructure while working alongside a dedicated team committed to serving our community. Every season brings new projects, new challenges, and opportunities to make a difference.
What You'll Do
No two days are the same! As Public Works Maintenance, you'll perform a wide variety of maintenance and repair duties, including:
  • Maintaining City parks, athletic fields, public buildings, restrooms, easements, and rights-of-way through mowing, trimming, weed control, irrigation maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep.
  • Keeping parks clean, safe, and inviting by performing trash collection, restroom cleaning, playground maintenance, and routine inspections.
  • Assisting with the maintenance and repair of City streets, storm sewers, and drainage systems through manual labor and equipment operation.
  • Setting up safe work zones, assisting with traffic control, installing guardrails, performing road patching, paving, and concrete work.
  • Removing snow and ice from streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and other public areas using plows, salters, shovels, and other equipment.
  • Operating pickup trucks, trailers, lawn mowers, chainsaws, hand tools, and other light equipment.
  • Removing roadway debris and other hazards to keep City streets safe.
  • Assisting with setup, teardown, and support of City events.
  • Supporting emergency response efforts, winter operations, special projects, and mutual aid initiatives.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Some experience operating light automotive equipment in varying weather conditions is preferred.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license with chauffeur endorsement and a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to maintain one throughout employment.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform minor equipment repairs and adjustments.

Physical Requirements
An employee in this position is required to regularly work in the field directly participating in heavy manual labor or observing work in progress. While in the field, the employee is required to operate light and heavy equipment and access work sites including confined spaces. Work sites may involve fumes, dust, chemical or other hazardous materials, loud machinery and equipment and other dangers. An employee in this position must have the strength, stamina and physical coordination needed to perform heavy manual labor and skilled equipment operation in outside weather conditions, including prolonged exposure to extreme heat and cold.
