Super Rink Assistant Director

Position Summary

The Super Rink Assistant Director is responsible for assisting in the overall leadership, operation, maintenance, and strategic management of the Super Rink, with a primary emphasis on the oversight, coordination, and continuous improvement of all facility maintenance systems and infrastructure. This position provides direct leadership over daily facility operations, including comprehensive maintenance of building systems, ice operations, staffing, safety, and customer service, while supporting long-term planning, budgeting, capital improvement projects, and organizational initiatives. The Assistant Director serves as a member of the facility leadership team and acts on behalf of the Director of Operations in their absence to ensure safe, efficient, reliable, and high-quality facility operations for patrons, athletes, staff, tenants, and visitors

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership and Administration
  • Provide critical leadership, technical input, and operational oversight for the facility’s refrigeration system changeover project, ensuring safe implementation, regulatory compliance, system reliability, and minimal disruption to arena operations.
  • Assist the Director of Operations in the overall leadership and administration of the Super Rink.
  • Participate in strategic planning, goal setting, and implementation of organizational initiatives.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement operational policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Lead special projects, capital improvement initiatives, and facility upgrades.
  • Analyze operational performance and recommend improvements to increase efficiency, customer service, and financial performance.
  • Participate in hiring, employee development, succession planning, and performance management.
  • Foster a positive culture emphasizing teamwork, accountability, safety, and customer service.
Facility Maintenance
  • Maintain ice resurfacing equipment and establish preventative maintenance protocols for Zambonis.
  • Monitor and maintain ice quality, thickness, and temperature.
  • Maintain refrigeration systems and ice plant equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and coordinate repairs to ice-making systems.
  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs for the facility.
  • Maintain HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building systems.
  • Recommend and coordinate major overhauls of equipment and maintain and improve the condition and appearance of facilities, grounds, and equipment.
Staff Supervision
  • Establish performance expectations and provide ongoing coaching with all full-time staff
  • Ensure staff compliance with safety policies and operational procedures.
Safety and Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and applicable local, state, and federal codes.
  • Develop and enforce safety procedures and emergency response protocols.
  • Respond to facility emergencies and operational issues as needed.
Budget and Inventory Management
  • Assist in developing and administering the annual operating budget
  • Identify opportunities for operational efficiencies and cost savings.
  • Participate in long-range capital planning and equipment replacement schedules.
Event Support
  • Oversee operational planning for tournaments, large events, and special programming.
  • Coordinate with tournament organizers, tenants, and community partners to ensure successful events.
  • Resolve escalated customer service and operational issues.
  • Ensure staffing plans meet event and facility needs.
Qualifications Required
  • Associate's degree in Facilities Management, Business Administration, Recreation, Engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible facility operations experience..
  • Experience in maintaining ice resurfacers and edgers
  • Knowledge of refrigeration systems, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred
  • Boilers License
  • Experience managing municipal, recreational, or sports facilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of ice arena operations and best practices.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with contract administration and vendor management.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond effectively to emergencies.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb ladders, and work in cold environments for extended periods.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as required.

This position works in a recreation and sports facility environment, including exposure to cold temperatures, mechanical equipment, cleaning chemicals, noise, and varying weather conditions when working outdoors.

Work Schedule and Compensation
  • The typical work schedule is 45-50 hours per week, depending on facility needs, events, seasonal demands, and maintenance projects.
  • Compensation will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Hiring range is $85,000 - $110,000 annually.
  • Due to the nature of arena operations, this position requires a flexible schedule and may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
