Job description

Title: Super Rink Operations Manager

Reports To: Super Rink Operations Director

Supervises: Facility Specialists, Maintenance Technicians, Custodial Staff

Position Summary

The Super Rink Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and repair of all ice-making equipment, building systems, and facility infrastructure within the arena. This position ensures a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment for patrons, athletes, staff, and visitors while delivering high-quality ice conditions and supporting daily arena operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ice Operations

  • Provide critical leadership, technical input, and operational oversight for the facility's refrigeration system changeover project, ensuring safe implementation, regulatory compliance, system reliability, and minimal disruption to arena operations.
  • Maintain ice resurfacing equipment and establish preventative maintenance protocols for Zambonis.
  • Monitor and maintain ice quality, thickness, and temperature.
  • Perform ice resurfacing, edging, painting, and seasonal ice installation/removal.
  • Maintain refrigeration systems and ice plant equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and coordinate repairs to ice-making systems.

Facility Maintenance

  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs for the facility.
  • Maintain HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building systems.
  • Recommend and coordinate major overhauls of equipment and maintain and improve the condition and appearance of facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Manage facility cleanliness and appearance standards.

Staff Supervision

  • Establish performance expectations and provide ongoing coaching with Facility Specialists, Ice Techs, and custodial staff.
  • Ensure staff compliance with safety policies and operational procedures.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and applicable local, state, and federal codes.
  • Develop and enforce safety procedures and emergency response protocols.
  • Maintain required records, inspections, permits, and certifications.
  • Respond to facility emergencies and operational issues as needed.

Budget and Inventory Management

  • Aid in development and management of budgets.
  • Monitor expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Purchase equipment, tools, parts, and supplies.
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance materials and chemicals.

Event Support

  • Coordinate facility setup and teardown for games, tournaments, practices, and special events.
  • Collaborate with arena management to support customer and tenant needs.
  • Provide on-call support during major events and operational emergencies.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 5 years of facility maintenance experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience operating ice resurfacing equipment and maintaining ice surfaces.
  • Knowledge of refrigeration systems, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred

  • Technical degree or certification in refrigeration, HVAC, facilities management, or a related field.
  • Boilers License
  • Certified Ice Technician (CIT) designation.
  • Experience managing municipal, recreational, or sports facilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of ice arena operations and best practices.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, blueprints, and equipment schematics.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with maintenance management software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond effectively to emergencies.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb ladders, and work in cold environments for extended periods.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as required.

Work Environment

This position works in a recreation and sports facility environment, including exposure to cold temperatures, mechanical equipment, cleaning chemicals, noise, and varying weather conditions when working outdoors.

Work Schedule and Compensation

  • This is a full-time, salaried position.
  • The typical work schedule is 45-50 hours per week, depending on facility needs, events, seasonal demands, and maintenance projects.
  • Compensation will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Hiring range is $75,000 - $100,000 annually.
  • Due to the nature of arena operations, this position requires a flexible schedule and may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
