What does an ice cream shop associate do?

An Ice Cream Shop Associate is responsible for serving customers, scooping and preparing ice cream treats, handling payments, and maintaining a clean and welcoming shop environment. They may also restock supplies, answer customer questions about flavors and products, and ensure proper food safety standards are followed. Good communication skills and a friendly attitude are important for this role, as associates often interact directly with customers. Additionally, they may assist with opening and closing duties and help promote special offers or new products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ice cream shop associate?

To thrive as an Ice Cream Shop Associate, you need strong customer service skills, basic math abilities, and food handling knowledge, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Friendliness, teamwork, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are standout soft skills for this position. These qualities ensure efficient service, customer satisfaction, and smooth daily operations in a fast-paced retail environment.

Ice Cream Shop Associates often encounter high customer volume and long lines during peak hours, such as weekends or hot summer days. Managing these demands requires strong multitasking skills, efficient teamwork, and a friendly attitude to maintain a positive customer experience. Associates should communicate clearly with their team, keep workstations organized, and stay calm under pressure. Adhering to established procedures for order taking and serving helps ensure accuracy and speed, making the rush periods more manageable and enjoyable.

Job description

Create Moments That Matter

Now Hiring: Ice Cream Scoopers – Salt & Straw

At Salt & Straw, we believe in making it count—every scoop and every guest interaction.

We're hiring Scoopers to create memorable experiences. More than serving ice cream, Scoopers guide guests through our flavors, share ingredient stories, and create meaningful connections.

If you love working with people, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and value kindness, curiosity, and hospitality, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do

Scoopers are at the heart of the Salt & Straw experience, creating memorable moments for guests while helping the shop run smoothly.

You will:

  • Deliver exceptional customer service and create welcoming experiences for every guest

  • Share flavor stories, offer samples, and help guests discover their next favorite scoop

  • Scoop ice cream, make waffle cones, operate the register, and support daily shop operations

  • Greet guests, answer questions, and help guide the flow of the shop

  • Accurately process transactions and assist with online and delivery orders

  • Prepare products according to recipes and quality standards

  • Restock ice cream, supplies, and retail products throughout the shift

  • Maintain food safety, cleanliness, and organization standards across the shop

  • Support dishwashing, cleaning, and other operational tasks that keep the shop running smoothly

  • Work collaboratively with teammates to create a positive and supportive environment

Why You'll Love It Here

  • We offer competitive pay, flexible scheduling, meaningful benefits, and opportunities to grow.

  • Financial Flexibility: Optional earned wage access and a 401(k) match after three months—even for part-time Team Members

  • Health & Wellness: Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits may become available upon reaching eligibility requirements

  • Mental Health Support: Free, 24/7 access to licensed mental health professionals for Team Members and their families

  • Work-Life Balance: Flexible scheduling, paid sick time, paid parental leave, and paid voting time

  •  Education & Growth: Up to $1,800 annually in Educational Assistance plus opportunities to grow into Shift Coordinator, Assistant General Manager, and General Manager roles

  • Team Discount: 30% off all the magic

  • First Dibs on Flavors before the public

  • Pet Insurance and additional wellness benefits

  • Flexible Spending Accounts, commuter benefits, and more

You're a Great Fit If You:

  • Are 16+ years old

  • Can work evenings, weekends, and holidays

  • Can work at least 3 shifts per week, including 2 closing shifts

  • Enjoy working with people and creating memorable guest experiences

  • Have strong communication skills and a positive attitude

  • Thrive in fast-paced environments and enjoy staying busy

  • Work well as part of a team and support those around you

  • Are curious, dependable, and eager to learn

  • Have food service, retail, coffee, restaurant, hospitality, or customer service experience (preferred but not required)

  • Are comfortable discussing flavors, offering samples, and engaging with guests

Ready to Scoop the Unbelievable? This is more than a job. It’s a chance to build something that matters, with your hands, your heart, and a whole lot of ice cream.
