Position Title:
Lifeguard/Swim Instructor

Provo City is looking for high-performing, responsible individuals to join the Aquatics team in the role of lifeguard, water safety/swimming instructor, and related capacities at the Provo City Recreation Center. Civic-minded individuals interested in supporting the services provided to the residents of Provo City by performing the duties described herein are strongly encouraged to apply.

What is the compensation?
  • Lifeguard $12.00 per hour.
  • Swim Instructor $13.00 per hour.
  • Aquatic Fitness Instructor $15.00 per hour.

Successful performers are eligible for $0.50 per hour pay increases every 6 months for up to 2 years.
Provo also pays a specialty rate for events outside of normal job hours.
Part-time Provo City employees are eligible to contribute to individual retirement savings plans through the City (401k, 457, Roth IRA, and/or Traditional IRA) and receive the following great perks: a) free admission to the Provo Recreation Center, Peaks Ice Arena Public Skating, and Provo Shooting Sports Park; b) a free Provo City Library Card; c) a 25% discount on Provo Recreation Center memberships (direct family only); and d) discounts from various local and national vendors.
What will I do?
Lifeguards
  • Lifeguard and instruct water safety courses at the Provo Recreation Center.
  • Monitor swimmers and patrons.
  • Provide first aid.
  • Rescue swimmers/patrons when necessary.
  • Employees will also assist staff members as needed and perform other related work as required.

Swim Instructors
  • Teach Red Cross sanctioned water safety and swimming classes.
  • Employees will also assist staff members as needed and perform other related work as required.

Aquatic Fitness Instructors
  • Lead water aerobics and aquatic fitness classes.
  • Ensure safety of paticipants.
  • Provide basic first aid or assistance as needed.

What do I need to apply?
  • Be 16 years of age (or 15 with restrictions) at time of appointment.
  • A current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification.
  • A current American Red Cross WSI Certification or equivalent AND/OR teaching swim experience (for Swim Instructor).
  • Preference given to applicants with Advancing Lifesaving Certification.

What are the hours and duration of employment?
Up to 25 hours per week, flexible within business hours of operation. Some weekend shifts will be required.
What are the physical and environmental factors?
This position requires: physical strength and agility to perform the work, including, rescuing, standing, bending, and swimming during instruction and safety assistance; the ability to work in various weather conditions; work with the public in potentially stressful situations; and regular exposure to the sun and pool chemicals.
What is the selection process?
Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted and kept on file for 60 days, after which they will be removed from the application process. Applicants must be eligible to apply as indicated above to be included. If selected for hire, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
