Permit Technician
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Schedule: Full-Time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Permit Technician to support the Building & Safety Department of a municipal agency in Los Angeles. This role is responsible for providing exceptional customer service while processing permit applications, supporting plan check operations, issuing permits, and ensuring compliance with applicable building codes and local regulations.
The ideal candidate has prior municipal permitting experience, possesses an active Permit Technician certification, and thrives in a fast-paced public service environment.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist contractors, homeowners, architects, engineers, developers, and the public in person, by phone, and via email.
  • Process building permit applications, construction documents, and related records.
  • Support plan check activities and coordinate permit issuance throughout the review process.
  • Calculate permit fees, collect payments, and accurately process transactions.
  • Utilize computerized permitting and permit tracking systems to maintain accurate records.
  • Review permit applications for completeness and compliance with established procedures.
  • Maintain permit files, documentation, and electronic records.
  • Prepare reports and provide administrative support to the Building & Safety Department.
  • Respond to a high volume of customer inquiries with professionalism and accuracy.
  • Interpret permit documents, property records, and basic construction plans.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable California building codes, municipal regulations, and department policies.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Permit Technician or in a closely related municipal permitting role.
  • Experience processing building permit applications from intake through issuance.
  • Experience supporting plan check functions within a Building & Safety Department.
  • Experience using automated permitting or permit tracking software.
  • Strong customer service, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret permit records, construction documents, and basic building plans.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, and computerized permitting systems.
  • Valid California Driver's License may be required.
 
Required Certification
Candidates must possess a current Permit Technician certification from a recognized code organization, including one of the following:
  • ICC (International Code Council) Permit Technician Certification
  • ICCBO Permit Technician Certification
  • IAPMO Permit Technician Certification
  • Another nationally or regionally recognized equivalent Permit Technician certification
 
An active certification is required for consideration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a municipal or public agency Building & Safety Department.
  • Knowledge of California Building Codes and local permitting requirements.
  • Experience working directly with contractors, developers, architects, and engineers.
  • Familiarity with electronic plan review systems and digital permitting platforms.
  • Experience working in a high-volume customer service environment.
