Apprentice Meter Tech - Georgia Statewide
Georgia Power Metering Department plays an integral part in Georgia economy. Hospitals, government agencies, schools, businesses, and individuals will be relying on you to provide reliable electric service and accurate billing information. Available Location: North Shallowford (Metro North)
Our Apprentice Meter Tech positions are typically located throughout the state of Georgia. Your ability to work anywhere in the state could be a factor in any hiring decisions. Flexibility in desired work locations is essential for progression through the Apprentice Meter Tech program. All candidates must be available to work within a certain distance of their assigned operating headquarters (upon hire). No relocation assistance is available.
Summary of Position Duties
The objective of the Apprentice Meter Tech program is to provide comprehensive, high-quality training that will prepare an Apprentice Meter Tech to progress to Meter Tech A positions with all the required skills and knowledge to perform the job safely and competently.
  • The two-year program is comprised of four modules, with each module consisting of classroom training and on the job training. Each module begins with classroom training and is then followed by on-the-job training, designed to reinforce the classroom training. In addition to the training activities the Apprentice Meter Tech, is expected to perform any productive work for which they are trained and qualified.
  • To progress through the program, the Apprentice Meter Tech must satisfactorily pass evaluations during each module.
  • Once an Apprentice Meter Tech meets all the requirements under this program, the employee will be promoted to "Meter Tech A" classification at the time a vacancy becomes available. The employee is assigned to the vacancy through the normal job bidding process. The assigned vacancy can be ANYWHERE in the state of Georgia and the employee must immediately relocate to that assigned location.

Job Responsibilities
  • This position interfaces with other departments in Georgia Power Company (including Marketing, Customer Services, Engineering, and Line), Customers, Electrical Contractors, and Electrical Inspectors to ensure metering installations are installed safely and installed to meet Georgia Power Company specifications and comply with all applicable code requirements.
  • Install and maintain single phase and three phase mechanical and electronic self-contained metering installations.
  • Install transformer-rated metering systems, including sizing instrument transformers, determining multipliers, programming solid-state meters, and the wiring and maintenance of all types of single and three phase transformer-rated installations.
  • Perform field test on all types of self-contained and transformer-rated mechanical and electronic meters.
  • Install, test and maintain pulse metering systems. Includes relays, recorders, totalizers, telecommunication systems, download load profile data, and determining pulse values.
  • Install and program multifunction meters, hands-on design, wiring, testing, and troubleshooting of multi-circuit, multi-function metering systems.
  • This job requires frequently working outside in inclement weather.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining unit. Membership is optional. The starting salary will be based upon the conditions of the Memorandum of Agreement Wage Schedule between Georgia Power and IBEW Local Union Number 84. The current starting pay for ALL HIRES is $7120 per month which equates to approximately $41.07 per hour (regardless of prior experience/skills). This pay rate is non-negotiable.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Job Experience and Education Requirements
To be considered the following is Preferred:
  • Documented minimum of 2-year vocational/technical school degree / Associate in Electronics/Electrical/Telecommunications study, military training OR
  • At least 4 years' work experience with installation, maintenance, and testing of commercial and industrial meter systems and current meter technologies OR
  • A combination of related work experience/military training and credits towards a 2-year degree/certification in Electronics/Electrical/Telecommunications - TOTALING 4 or more years.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Detailed knowledge of electrical theory and mechanical principles.
  • Excellent math calculation skills necessary.
  • Basic understanding of Electrical Distribution Systems.
  • Knowledge/training and/or work experience of vectors, trigonometry, AC/DC circuits, transformers, single/three phase metering systems, meter sockets, installations of meters (connect/reconnect/disconnect) and/or meter testing are a plus.
  • Prior experience with AMI Smart Meters and/or Smart Meter Network is a plus.
  • Intermediate Computer Skills (file management, Windows, and Microsoft Office Applications) required.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • Proven excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated good organizational skills.
  • Proven problem solver.
  • Knowledge of hand tools.
  • Candidate must currently have a valid driver license and be able to obtain a valid Driver's License (CMV), with maximum gross vehicle weight rating of over 10,000 pounds.
  • Candidate must have demonstrated the ability to successfully work in a team environment and be committed to working safely.

Candidates for the position of Apprentice Meterman must CURRENTLY NOT EXCEED (and maintain) a personal body weight [fully dressed and including work boots] of two hundred seventy (270) pounds.
Candidate must be available to work storm duty additional hours/overtime which could include working evenings, nights, weekends and/or holiday.
  • Candidate must be available to work at other company locations when needed, including traveling out of town and overnight stay.
  • Candidate/new hire must provide proper safety toe shoes or boots.
  • Candidate should meet the physical requirements of the position, including (but not limited to): bending, kneeling, crawling, walking, overhead reaching, stooping and standing for long periods of time, working outdoors in all weather conditions,
  • Candidate must be able to currently lift and drag equipment weighing 60 lbs. or more in a safe manner.
  • Candidates who receive a job offer will be required to successfully complete a thorough background verification and drug screening prior to employment.

This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle. The following will be required if you are selected for this position:
  • Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver's license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver's license).
  • Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
