Job description

POSITION: Assistant Scene Shop Supervisor
DEPARTMENT: Playhouse
REPORTS TO: Technical Director
WORK SCHEDULE: Fully on campus
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Assistant Scene Shop Supervisor will assist in the overall management of scenic elements, the scenic fabrication studio, and the distribution of labor and support. They will assist in managing material inventory, hardware supply, and maintaining an inventory of stock scenic elements. They will also be responsible for assisting in supervising the carpenters and student labor in the efforts of constructing, installing and maintaining all scenic elements and spaces.
This is an IATSE union position and will require membership, which can be obtained through Point Park University.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent with at least 3 years professional supervision experience.
  • Broad working knowledge of all aspects of theatrical construction, fabrication, and rigging
  • The ability to read and understand ground plans, sections, lighting plots, and elevations.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of construction.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, V-Carve and Microsoft Suite
  • Must be comfortable working at heights on genies, ladders, catwalks, etc.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills are required
  • Great interpersonal, organizational, and supervisory skills are essential

DUTIES:
Essential:
1.Manage the Construction, installation and strike (load-out) of all scenic needs for productions, events, and installations at the playhouse. (30%)
2: Manage and train both students and staff working with scene shop tools and hardware. (15%)
3. Maintain scene shop tools, inventory, and supplies in the Pittsburgh Playhouse (15%)
4. Attend Production and Departmental meetings as necessary. (10%)
5. Attend Technical Rehearsals for Playhouse and outside rental productions and events. (10%)
6. Maintain a safe working environment for students and staff. (10%)
7. Other duties as assigned. (10%)
Non-Essential:
1. Responsible for assisting in the administration, budget management and paperwork of the scene shop. (50%)
2. Assist in maintaining organization of all stock inventory, tools in the shop and hardware/fasteners (15%)
3. Assist with general upkeep of the scene shop and spaces (15%)
4. Assist in cultivating and managing a large roster of freelance technicians or overhire. (10%)
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Regular exposure to unfavorable conditions such as weather conditions, or confined, noisy, or dirty locations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job requires repetitively lifting average weight objects with repetitive bending and stooping. Frequently lifts heavy objects but alternating with lighter activities. Job may require physical exertion such as long periods of standing. Job may require above-average agility and dexterity.
