Job description
Schedule: 4 ten-hour shifts, 8:30p to 6:30a. Some weekends and holidays will be required to work. Hours will vary based on training.
About the PositionThe Registered Polysomnography Technician (RPSGT) assumes responsibility and accountability for performing a wide variety of sleep diagnostic and therapeutic services in accordance with established departmental policies. The technician will provide support for other healthcare members by assisting in transporting, positioning and moving patients. The technician will perform general tasks as assigned such as answering the telephone, cleaning of equipment and checking for supplies and contacting the respiratory clerk or Material Handling for re-ordering supplies that are low. The technician will also be able to initiate all appropriate paperwork and retrieve records as needed. Other tasks include electrode and sensor placement as well as room turnover. Candidates who are currently in training toward RPSGT certification will also be considered. The Polysomnography Technician in Training is an entry-level position that involves learning to conduct, monitor, and analyze overnight sleep studies under the supervision of qualified technologists.
Overview of Responsibilities• Identifies physical, social and psychological needs of the patient, family, and significant other as part of the patient assessment.
• Establishes priorities of care and provides necessary patient care as needed.
• Documents concise narrative notes that reflect the patient's response to care given.
• Transcribes and implements physician's orders accurately as well as compiles test results of patient to be forward to the physician.
• Utilizes policies, procedures, protocols and standards of care for Sleep Disorders Center.
• Comply with AASM continuing education requirements.
• Scoring of Home Sleep Studies per AASM guidelines.
• Monitors inventory and orders supplies as needed.
• Entering of charges for Sleep Studies.
• Access email, EPIC in basket, EPIC work queues daily and as needed.
• Recognizes the need for and performs appropriate measures in emergency situations. Initiates airway management, AED placement and CPR when indicated.
• Initiates, monitors and manages CPAP/BiPAP titration in accordance with department policy and procedure.
• Measures accurately the position of electrodes and sensor placement for testing procedure.
• Responsible for the set-up and management of oxygen used during testing in accordance with department policy and procedure.
• Distinguishes artifact potentials from true cerebral potentials and takes necessary steps to eliminate artifact.
• Monitors feedback from patient and/or significant others and suggest modification from feedback.

Education & Experience• Education Required Registered Polysomnography Tech: After qualifications are met according to the AASM guidelines, full time employees will have one year to become a Registered Polysomnography Technologist. After that year, their position will be reassessed for an extension in time or dismissal.
• The following credentials are accepted to qualify candidates for the RPSGT exam under Pathway 2 training: Nursing (LPN, RN), Respiratory Care (RRT, CRT), Electroneurodiagnostic (R EEG T, R EP T, CNIM), Paramedic (EMT-P), Radiology (RT, RT (R), RT(CT), RT (BD), RT (NI)), Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT), Certified Nuclear Medicine Technician (CNMT), Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT), Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS), Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RDCS), Certified Athletic Trainer (AT), Medical Technologist (MT), Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician (RAT), Registered Vascular Technician (RVT), Certified Pulmonary Function Technician (CPFT), Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP), Registered Pulmonary Function Technician (RPFT), and Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA).
• In-Training Requirements:
• Education Required: After qualifications are met according to the AASM guidelines, full time employees will have one year to become a Registered Polysomnography Technologist. After that year, their position will be reassessed for an extension in time or dismissal.
• Experience Preferred: 18 months of medical experience in a healthcare setting
• Licensure in the State of Indiana as a Respiratory Care Practitioner is preferred.
• Licensure in the health care field is preferred.
• Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
• Pathway #2 - you must submit a copy of the credential
