Hydrogen Project Engineer information

What is a hydrogen project engineer?

Hydrogen Project Engineers are professionals who oversee the design, development, and implementation of projects related to hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and utilization. They work on creating systems that safely and efficiently handle hydrogen, often for use in energy, industrial, or transportation applications. Their responsibilities include project planning, technical design, compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams. They also play a key role in advancing hydrogen technologies as part of the clean energy transition.

What are some common challenges faced by hydrogen project engineers during the design and commissioning phases of a project?

Hydrogen Project Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring safety due to hydrogen's flammability and reactivity. During the design phase, they must carefully select materials and components that are compatible with hydrogen and meet regulatory standards. In the commissioning phase, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to test and validate systems can be complex, especially when integrating new technologies or meeting tight deadlines. Effective communication and a strong focus on safety protocols are essential for overcoming these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hydrogen project engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hydrogen Project Engineer, you generally need a degree in chemical, mechanical, or process engineering, along with experience in hydrogen production or renewable energy projects. Familiarity with industry-specific software (such as AutoCAD, Aspen HYSYS, or process simulation tools) and relevant certifications (like PMP or hydrogen safety training) are typically required. Strong project management, problem-solving, and communication skills help you coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage complex technical challenges. These skills and qualifications ensure the safe, efficient, and successful delivery of hydrogen projects in a rapidly evolving energy sector.

What is the difference between Hydrogen Project Engineer vs Hydrogen Process Engineer?

AspectHydrogen Project EngineerHydrogen Process Engineer

Job description

We are seeking a Director, Project Development to join our team. In this role, you will lead the development of large-scale industrial green hydrogen projects from conception through Final Investment Decision (FID), deploying Electric Hydrogen's HYPRPlant equipment.

This is a senior individual contributor role requiring a commercially minded leader with a passion for industrial decarbonization. You will be responsible for building and advancing a pipeline of investable green hydrogen and e-Fuel projects, managing all aspects of project development, including site selection, customer origination, permitting, power procurement, financing, and commercial contracting. You will lead cross-functional teams and serve as the primary development lead for projects within your portfolio.

You will work in a hybrid capacity from our Houston, TX office and report to the Vice President, Project Development.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Originate and develop a pipeline of large-scale green hydrogen projects across the United States, advancing opportunities from concept through Final Investment Decision (FID) utilizing Electric Hydrogen's HYPRPlant technology.
  • Lead all project development activities, including site acquisition, customer and offtake agreements, renewable power procurement, grid interconnection, permitting, and project financing.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with industrial customers, offtake counterparties, landowners, utilities, and project partners to support both active projects and future business opportunities.
  • Lead cross-functional project development teams, including internal stakeholders and external consultants, to achieve project milestones on schedule and within budget.
  • Develop, maintain, and evaluate project economic models and proformas, identifying and mitigating risks while providing recommendations at key investment decision points.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, capital approvals, and reporting processes, ensuring transparency and alignment across stakeholders.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in assigned market segments, such as ammonia, methanol, e-SAF, and other emerging decarbonization pathways, contributing to business strategy and project origination efforts.
  • Collaborate closely with global sales teams to support customer partnership structures, including development services agreements, joint ventures, and other commercial arrangements.
  • Partner with internal and external technical experts to evaluate technology options and project design pathways, including e-Fuel production technologies.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of project development experience within the energy, renewable energy, industrial, or infrastructure sectors, with a demonstrated track record of advancing projects through development to financial close or Final Investment Decision (FID).
  • Experience in green hydrogen, industrial gases, e-Fuels, or related clean energy industries strongly preferred.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience developing customer relationships, negotiating commercial agreements, and supporting project origination efforts.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage external service providers across engineering, legal, environmental, permitting, commercial, and finance functions.
  • Strong understanding of project economics and financial modeling, with the ability to evaluate development risks and communicate recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to operate independently, navigate ambiguity, and drive projects forward in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, integrity, inclusion, and team success.
