How much do hydrogen engineer jobs pay per year?
What is a hydrogen engineer?
A Hydrogen Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and optimizes hydrogen production, storage, and distribution systems. They work with technologies like electrolysis, fuel cells, and hydrogen transportation to support clean energy initiatives. Their role may involve research, safety assessments, and implementing hydrogen infrastructure for industries such as transportation, energy, and manufacturing.
What are some typical daily responsibilities for a hydrogen engineer?
On a typical day, a Hydrogen Engineer may be involved in designing, analyzing, and optimizing hydrogen production, storage, and distribution systems. Tasks often include conducting feasibility studies, preparing technical reports, reviewing safety protocols, and overseeing the installation and testing of hydrogen equipment. The role also requires regular collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, such as project managers, safety specialists, and R&D scientists. This dynamic work environment offers opportunities to innovate within the clean energy sector and contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the hydrogen engineer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Hydrogen Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or process engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and practical experience in hydrogen systems or fuel cell technology. Familiarity with specialized modeling software (such as Aspen HYSYS or AutoCAD), safety standards, and certifications like Certified Hydrogen Safety Professional is valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and collaboration are essential soft skills in this role. These abilities are critical for ensuring safe, efficient, and innovative hydrogen project development in this rapidly evolving sector.

Job description
Company Overview
VulcanX Energy Corp. leads the industry with its groundbreaking patented technology, focused on the efficient production of low-cost, low-emission hydrogen and solid carbon through natural gas pyrolysis (thermal cracking). Building on substantial advancements achieved in the laboratory, as well as successful de-risking in the hydrogen production pilot plant, VulcanX is now poised to scale its natural gas pyrolysis technology further. Our current focus lies in the development of FEED and Detailed Engineering Designs for our second-generation pilot plant, marking a pivotal phase in the de-risking process and paving the way for widespread commercialization.
Job Description
We are seeking a highly qualified Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team and support the FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations of VulcanX's hydrogen production plants. As an integral member of the team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in the mechanical design of this novel technology. The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of industrial experience in chemical plant design, with a strong background in piping, pressure vessel systems, high-temperature hydrocarbon pyrolysis, corrosive environments, and a deep understanding of hydrogen systems.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance, and quality assurance, to ensure seamless project delivery.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills to effectively liaise with VulcanX's leadership team, stakeholders, clients, and regulatory bodies.
- Provide overall mechanical engineering support on equipment and piping systems to the project team from conceptual design through to detailed engineering, construction support, and project commissioning and start-up.
- Prepare conceptual designs and assist in the development of preliminary studies by providing expertise on mechanical equipment, piping systems, and material selection.
- Provide expertise and recommendations on static and rotating equipment design (pumps, compressors, pressure vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, etc.)
- Develop mechanical equipment specifications and Request for Quotation (RFQ) packages
- Prepare Line Designation Table for projects
- Perform full cycle of Vendor Drawings/Documentations review and approval
- Perform review and approval of vendor-supplied pipe fittings, manual valves, and specialty items specifications, drawings, and documents to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and project specifications.
- Coordinate further review of the above documents by other relevant disciplines using Bluebeam
- Perform stress analysis on critical piping systems for the pyrolysis process plant
- Develop and implement QA/QC processes for project work
- Develop and manage the master equipment list
- Develop mechanical equipment data sheets
- Develop mechanical & piping RFQ/MRP
- Perform technical bid evaluations and provide award recommendations for vendor-supplied equipment
- Participate in process hazard analysis including What-ifs, HAZOPs, and HAZIDs
- Support vendors with registration of pressure vessels and prepare piping system ABSA registration package.
- Assist in project scheduling and development of engineering and capital cost estimates
- Resolve problems using standard engineering procedures and previously developed methods
- Liaise with vendors and other disciplines to integrate equipment into the final design
- Provide mechanical input into multidisciplinary engineering documents such as the project Design Basis Memorandum (DBM) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
- Perform complex and detailed engineering calculations when required
- Participate in reviewing other disciplines' documents in Bluebeam
- Support construction RFIs related to equipment and piping
- Ability to travel and work at the site as needed
