Company Overview

VulcanX Energy Corp. leads the industry with its groundbreaking patented technology, focused on the efficient production of low-cost, low-emission hydrogen and solid carbon through natural gas pyrolysis (thermal cracking). Building on substantial advancements achieved in the laboratory, as well as successful de-risking in the hydrogen production pilot plant, VulcanX is now poised to scale its natural gas pyrolysis technology further. Our current focus lies in the development of FEED and Detailed Engineering Designs for our second-generation pilot plant, marking a pivotal phase in the de-risking process and paving the way for widespread commercialization.

Job Description

We are seeking a highly qualified Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team and support the FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations of VulcanX's hydrogen production plants. As an integral member of the team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in the mechanical design of this novel technology. The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of industrial experience in chemical plant design, with a strong background in piping, pressure vessel systems, high-temperature hydrocarbon pyrolysis, corrosive environments, and a deep understanding of hydrogen systems.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance, and quality assurance, to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills to effectively liaise with VulcanX's leadership team, stakeholders, clients, and regulatory bodies.
  • Provide overall mechanical engineering support on equipment and piping systems to the project team from conceptual design through to detailed engineering, construction support, and project commissioning and start-up.
  • Prepare conceptual designs and assist in the development of preliminary studies by providing expertise on mechanical equipment, piping systems, and material selection.
  • Provide expertise and recommendations on static and rotating equipment design (pumps, compressors, pressure vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, etc.)
  • Develop mechanical equipment specifications and Request for Quotation (RFQ) packages
  • Prepare Line Designation Table for projects
  • Perform full cycle of Vendor Drawings/Documentations review and approval
  • Perform review and approval of vendor-supplied pipe fittings, manual valves, and specialty items specifications, drawings, and documents to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and project specifications.
  • Coordinate further review of the above documents by other relevant disciplines using Bluebeam
  • Perform stress analysis on critical piping systems for the pyrolysis process plant
  • Develop and implement QA/QC processes for project work
  • Develop and manage the master equipment list
  • Develop mechanical equipment data sheets
  • Develop mechanical & piping RFQ/MRP
  • Perform technical bid evaluations and provide award recommendations for vendor-supplied equipment
  • Participate in process hazard analysis including What-ifs, HAZOPs, and HAZIDs
  • Support vendors with registration of pressure vessels and prepare piping system ABSA registration package.
  • Assist in project scheduling and development of engineering and capital cost estimates
  • Resolve problems using standard engineering procedures and previously developed methods
  • Liaise with vendors and other disciplines to integrate equipment into the final design
  • Provide mechanical input into multidisciplinary engineering documents such as the project Design Basis Memorandum (DBM) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Perform complex and detailed engineering calculations when required
  • Participate in reviewing other disciplines' documents in Bluebeam
  • Support construction RFIs related to equipment and piping
  • Ability to travel and work at the site as needed
  • Assist in the review and preparation of project control documents and status reports
  • Evaluate vendor quotations as well as liaise with the Procurement Department to purchase equipment
  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism, reliability, and ethical conduct in all aspects of the role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably graduate) in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Science
  • Certified Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta (APEGA). British Columbia (EGBC) P.Eng. is an asset.
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience in the oil and gas industry, hydrogen and solid carbon production, and chemical process design, with a focus on high-temperature equipment and piping systems, preferably in hydrocarbon pyrolysis processes
  • 5+ years of work experience in EPC companies is an asset.
  • Experience developing conceptual and pre-FEED studies and techno-economic assessments of emerging technologies would be considered an asset
  • Previous experience in developing pilot plants and industrial-scale plants, scale-up and commercialization, commissioning, and operations of process plants is an asset.
  • Experience in mechanical equipment design/selection from inception to commissioning is a must.
  • Material selection knowledge and MSD preparation are an asset.
  • Hydrogen production experience would be considered an asset.
  • Fundamental understanding and application of engineering concepts, codes, design standards, and guidelines applicable to the process engineering discipline
  • Proficient in ASME Sec. VIII code for pressure vessel design, CSA Z662 code for Pipeline, ASME B31.3 code for Piping, TEMA for Heat exchangers, and API for pumps and compressors
  • Field or site experience is an asset.
  • Strong ability to track progress and prepare status reports
  • Ability to use judgment to solve problems based on engineering guidelines and procedures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism
  • Self-motivatedwith the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to perform and complete multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Knowledge of project management principles and management of change is an asset.
  • Ability to travel to and work at the site as needed
