Hybrid Embedded Software Engineer information

What is a hybrid embedded software engineer?

A Hybrid Embedded Software Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems, often integrating both hardware and software components. The 'hybrid' aspect refers to their ability to work across different platforms, such as combining traditional embedded programming with higher-level software, networking, or cloud-based solutions. These engineers typically write code in languages like C, C++, or Python and work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware. Their work is crucial in industries like automotive, IoT, robotics, and consumer electronics, where devices need to operate reliably and efficiently.

How do hybrid embedded software engineers typically collaborate with hardware teams during product development?

Hybrid Embedded Software Engineers often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration between software and physical components. This collaboration involves frequent cross-functional meetings, joint debugging sessions, and hands-on testing to resolve issues at the intersection of hardware and software. Effective communication and flexibility are essential, as requirements may evolve based on hardware constraints or performance findings. This partnership is crucial for delivering robust, reliable embedded systems that meet both performance and safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hybrid embedded software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hybrid Embedded Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in C/C++ programming, embedded systems design, and a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontroller platforms, hardware debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability are crucial soft skills in this position. These abilities ensure the development of reliable, efficient embedded solutions and seamless integration between hardware and software components.

What is the difference between Hybrid Embedded Software Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectHybrid Embedded Software EngineerFirmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related; experience with embedded systemsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related; experience with firmware development
Work EnvironmentDesigning and integrating software across hardware platforms, often in cross-functional teamsDeveloping low-level code directly interacting with hardware, often in manufacturing or product development
Industry UsageAutomotive, IoT, consumer electronics, medical devicesConsumer electronics, IoT, industrial equipment, embedded systems

The Hybrid Embedded Software Engineer focuses on developing and integrating software that bridges hardware and software layers, often working on complex systems. Firmware Engineers primarily write low-level code that directly controls hardware components. While both roles require embedded systems knowledge, the hybrid engineer has a broader scope involving software integration, whereas firmware engineers specialize in low-level hardware interaction.

Job description

Gaming:
Welcome to the world of land-based gaming. At Light & Wonder, it's all about the games, and our Gaming team builds cutting-edge technology, products, and content for the most iconic casinos and operators across the globe.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Lead Embedded Electronics Engineer to lead the design, development, and validation of complex embedded electrical systems for innovative electronic products. This role is responsible for architecture and circuit design, power regulation systems, digital communication interfaces, and regulatory-compliant system development, driving programs from concept through New Product Introduction (NPI) and into sustained production.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, analytical capability, and demonstrated leadership in taking products from concept through production release. This position also serves as a mentor to junior engineers and a subject matter expert across cross-functional teams.
Design & Development
  • Lead the design, modeling, and simulation of embedded electrical systems
  • Develop low- to high-density circuit cards and power/signal conversion systems
  • Architect embedded system platforms including power regulation and digital communication subsystems
  • Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, manufacturability, and regulatory compliance requirements

Technical Leadership
  • Direct technical design reviews and define electrical system requirements
  • Own electrical architecture decisions from concept through production
  • Drive technology alignment with product roadmaps and business objectives
  • Provide technical oversight during prototype builds, compliance testing, and production ramp
  • Interface with suppliers for vendor qualification and product launch support
  • Provide ongoing sustainment support for fielded hardware products

Analysis, Compliance & Simulation
  • Perform advanced electrical analysis using industry-standard simulation tools
  • Validate signal integrity, power integrity, EMI/EMC performance, and overall system robustness
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards and EMC requirements (FCC, CE, IEC)
  • Support pre-compliance and formal certification testing, including documentation and remediation

Problem Solving & Validation
  • Lead failure analysis and root cause investigations
  • Troubleshoot complex system-level issues in lab and field environments
  • Diagnose EMI, ESD, grounding, and safety-related issues
  • Implement corrective actions and drive continuous product improvement

Mentorship & Collaboration
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers in best practices and design methodology
  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, manufacturing, compliance, and quality teams
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for stakeholders across the organization

Education
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field

Experience
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical system design, development, or testing
  • Demonstrated experience taking products from concept through NPI and production release
  • Experience supporting regulatory certification and compliance testing

Qualifications
Technical Expertise
  • Deep knowledge of embedded system architecture
  • Strong experience in high-speed digital design, power regulation/conversion, and high-density PCB layout
  • Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB CAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer or equivalent)
  • Experience with simulation and analysis tools (e.g., HFSS, ADS, or similar)
  • Expertise in digital communication interfaces including RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet, and USB

Regulatory & Compliance Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of applicable safety and EMC standards (IEC, FCC Part 15, CE)
  • Experience designing for EMI mitigation, grounding, shielding, filtering, and surge protection

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in regulated or high-reliability industries (medical, industrial, telecom, consumer electronics, etc.)
  • Experience leading compliance testing and working with third-party certification bodies
  • Background in system-level power distribution and protection design
  • Experience mentoring engineering teams
  • Familiarity with manufacturing validation processes and production support

Key Competencies
  • Strong analytical and systems-level thinking
  • Technical leadership and architectural ownership
  • Deep understanding of compliance-driven design
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Clear cross-functional communication
  • Ownership mindset with the ability to drive projects to completion
