What is an HVAC apprentice union?

An HVAC Apprentice Union job is a paid, hands-on training position where individuals learn heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) skills under the supervision of experienced union journeymen. Apprentices typically join a union, such as the UA (United Association) or Sheet Metal Workers, which provides structured training through classroom instruction and on-the-job experience. This apprenticeship usually lasts 3-5 years and includes coursework on HVAC systems, refrigeration, electrical components, and safety regulations. Upon completion, apprentices can become journeymen, gaining higher wages and more job opportunities. Union apprenticeships also offer benefits like healthcare and retirement plans.

What are the typical career advancement opportunities for an HVAC apprentice in a union setting?

As an HVAC Apprentice in a union environment, you can look forward to a clearly defined pathway for career growth, often outlined in your apprenticeship agreement. After successfully completing your apprenticeship and required training hours, you can advance to become a journeyman HVAC technician, which comes with increased responsibilities and higher pay. With experience and ongoing education, some professionals move into supervisory roles, specialized technical positions, or even pursue training to become instructors. Unions often provide additional training programs and resources to help members continue building their skills and advance their careers within the trade.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HVAC apprentice union member?

To thrive as an HVAC Apprentice Union member, you need a foundational understanding of mechanical systems, basic math skills, and typically a high school diploma or GED. Familiarity with hand and power tools, safety protocols, and, in some cases, OSHA 10 certification are commonly expected. Strong work ethic, effective communication, and the ability to follow instructions set exceptional apprentices apart. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring safety, learning efficiency, and smooth teamwork while progressing toward becoming a licensed HVAC technician.

How do I join an HVAC Apprentice Union?

To join an HVAC Apprentice Union, you typically need to apply through the union local, meet minimum age and educational requirements, and complete an apprenticeship program that includes classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Some unions also require passing an aptitude test and paying initiation fees. Once accepted, apprentices often work under union contracts and may need to obtain relevant certifications such as EPA refrigerant handling.

How much does a union HVAC apprentice make?

A union HVAC apprentice typically earns between $15 and $25 per hour, with wages increasing as they gain experience and complete training. Apprentices often receive benefits such as health insurance and paid time off, and the pay rate may vary by region and union agreements.

Is it hard to get into union HVAC apprentice programs?

Getting into union HVAC apprentice programs can be competitive, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent, passing an aptitude test, and meeting age and physical fitness requirements. Applicants typically need to demonstrate basic math skills and a strong work ethic, as well as complete an application process that may include interviews and assessments.

HVAC Apprentice – Entry Level

No HVAC Experience Required | Paid On-the-Job Training

Position Summary

We are looking for a dependable, hardworking individual who wants to build a career in the HVAC trade. No previous HVAC experience is required. We are willing to train the right person.

As an HVAC Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced HVAC technicians and installers while learning how to install, maintain, and eventually service residential heating and cooling systems.

This is an entry-level position with the opportunity to develop into a skilled HVAC technician or installer.

What You'll Do
  • Assist HVAC technicians with residential heating and cooling installations
  • Load, unload, organize, and transport equipment and materials
  • Help remove old furnaces, air conditioners, boilers, and other equipment
  • Assist with installing new HVAC equipment, ductwork, piping, venting, and accessories
  • Keep jobsites, work vehicles, and equipment clean and organized
  • Learn proper use of HVAC tools and equipment
  • Learn how residential heating and cooling systems operate
  • Follow company installation standards and safety procedures
  • Communicate professionally with customers and coworkers
  • Complete assigned training and work toward becoming an HVAC technician
What We're Looking For

No HVAC experience is necessary.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Shows up on time and is dependable
  • Has a strong work ethic
  • Is willing to learn and accepts coaching
  • Enjoys working with their hands
  • Is comfortable using basic hand and power tools
  • Can work as part of a team
  • Takes pride in doing quality work
  • Maintains a professional appearance and attitude
  • Can safely perform physical work, including lifting equipment and working in attics, crawl spaces, and outdoors
  • Has a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

Mechanical, construction, automotive, maintenance, warehouse, or other hands-on experience is helpful but not required.

What We Provide
  • Paid on-the-job training
  • Training from experienced HVAC professionals
  • Opportunities to learn installation, service, and troubleshooting
  • A clear path to becoming an HVAC technician
  • Opportunities for increased responsibility and compensation as your skills develop
  • Company-provided training and support
  • A team environment focused on quality workmanship and excellent customer service
Who Should Apply?

You may be a great fit if you are looking for a career instead of just another job. You do not need HVAC experience—we can teach HVAC.

We are looking for someone who brings the things that are harder to teach: reliability, work ethic, a positive attitude, mechanical aptitude, and a desire to improve.
