ROLE: HVAC Apprentice
POSITION SUMMARY:
The HVAC Apprentice is an entry level position in the HVAC Industry. The HVAC Apprentice works under the guidance and supervision of an experienced HVAC technician, learning and performing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs and/or replacement or fit-out HVAC work. The apprentice must be career-oriented and want to learn, master the trade, and take ownership of a career as a full-time technician. This employee will work performing duties as assigned in a residential setting. They will work with numerous system parts and mechanisms.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assisting HVAC technicians: An HVAC apprentice works under the guidance and supervision of experienced HVAC technicians. They assist in installing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining HVAC systems, including heating units, air conditioning units, and ventilation systems. This may involve carrying tools, materials, and equipment, and performing basic tasks as directed by the technician.
  • Learning and applying technical skills: HVAC apprentices are responsible for learning and applying the technical skills required in the HVAC trade. This may include understanding how to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and manuals, using hand and power tools, measuring and cutting materials, soldering and brazing, and troubleshooting HVAC systems.
  • Performing routine maintenance: HVAC apprentices may assist in performing routine maintenance tasks on HVAC systems, such as cleaning and replacing filters, checking and adjusting thermostats, inspecting electrical components, and lubricating moving parts. They may also assist in conducting performance tests and diagnostics on HVAC systems to identify and resolve issues.
  • Following safety protocols: HVAC apprentices are expected to adhere to safety protocols and procedures at all times to ensure a safe work environment. This may include wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), following lockout/tagout procedures, handling hazardous materials properly, and using tools and equipment safely.
  • Maintaining tools and equipment: HVAC apprentices are responsible for maintaining tools and equipment used in their work. This may involve cleaning, organizing, and returning tools to their proper places, reporting damaged or malfunctioning tools, and assisting in inventory management.
  • Learning and complying with codes and regulations: HVAC apprentices are expected to learn and comply with local, state, and federal codes and regulations related to HVAC systems, such as building codes, environmental regulations, and safety standards.
  • Continuing education and professional development: HVAC apprentices are often required to participate in ongoing training and professional development to improve their skills and knowledge of the HVAC trade.
  • Assisting with customer service: HVAC apprentices may interact with customers, and assist with addressing their questions or concerns. This may involve providing basic information about HVAC systems, explaining repairs or maintenance tasks, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Following company policies and procedures: HVAC apprentices are expected to follow company policies and procedures, including attendance, punctuality, and dress code, and maintain a professional and respectful attitude towards co-workers, supervisors, and customers.
  • Use basic math computations needed to perform in the HVAC trade
  • Possess the ability to follow building, job site and department procedures and policies
  • Complete other duties as assigned

MINIMUM / PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 0-2 years of experience in HVAC; or equivalent combination of education (technical school) and experience is required
  • Operating knowledge of Microsoft Office software and working proficiency with hand-held computer (i.e. smartphone, tablet).
  • Possess a current, valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Be able to work full time schedule and on-call nights, weekends, holidays
  • EPA Certification preferred but not necessary.

SKILLS:
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Perform math computations needed in the trade
  • Knowledge of trade related tools needed for job applying
  • Operating knowledge and working proficiency with hand-held computer (i.e. smartphone, tablet).
  • The ability to remain flexible and adaptable in work schedules and assignments as defined by departmental and organizational needs.
  • Must possess strong mechanical aptitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to manipulate, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift equipment, tools, products, and supplies, up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
