Job Summary
The Department of English, World Languages, and Cultural Studies invites applications for Adjunct Instructors of Humanities to teach undergraduate Humanities courses beginning in the Fall 2026 semester.
The Department of English, World Languages, and Cultural Studies is committed to excellence in teaching, interdisciplinary inquiry, student success, and community engagement. As the department enters an exciting period of renewal and curricular innovation, we seek dedicated educators who are enthusiastic about joining a collaborative academic community and contributing to student learning.
We seek instructors who are committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and who can create engaging, student-centered learning environments that support students from diverse educational, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, including first-generation college students. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills, a commitment to inclusive pedagogy, and the ability to foster critical thinking, discussion, and intellectual curiosity in the humanities classroom.
Primary teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate Humanities courses, particularly HU 225: Humanities, with additional teaching opportunities based on departmental needs and the candidate's qualifications. Adjunct appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis, with teaching assignments determined by enrollment and departmental needs.
Essential Functions
- Teach assigned undergraduate Humanities courses, including HU 225: Humanities.
- Develop engaging, student-centered learning experiences that promote critical thinking, ethical reflection, cultural understanding, and effective communication.
- Facilitate thoughtful classroom discussions and encourage the analysis of texts, ideas, and cultural traditions from diverse historical and global perspectives.
- Assess student learning and submit grades in accordance with university deadlines.
- Maintain regular communication with students and respond promptly to questions regarding course content and expectations.
- Utilize the University's learning management system and instructional technologies to support student learning.
- Support the mission of Bethune-Cookman University and contribute positively to the academic life of the department.
Minimum Education and Experience
Candidates must meet the following minimum education and credentialing requirements:
- Master's degree in Humanities or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Humanities or a closely related field appropriate to the courses assigned, consistent with institutional and accreditation requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate Humanities or related courses effectively.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will also be given to candidates who have:
- Previous undergraduate teaching experience.
- Experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience using Canvas or other learning management systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to student engagement, retention, and academic success.
- Experience teaching discussion-based, reading-intensive, or writing-intensive courses.
