Job description

Middle School Science Teacher

The Middle School Science Teacher is responsible for delivering a dynamic and engaging science curriculum to students in grades 6–8. The ideal candidate is a passionate educator with a deep understanding of Science content, developmental appropriateness, and innovative instructional strategies. In addition to teaching responsibilities, this faculty member will serve as a student advisor and actively participate in the life of the school.

Essential Functions

  • Design and implement a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate science curriculum aligned with department goals.
  • Prepare engaging lesson plans, deliver instruction, and assess student understanding through a variety of assessment tools.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistency across grade levels and support student learning.
  • Establish clear classroom expectations and maintain a positive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, and advisors regarding academic progress and classroom behavior.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance and grades and prepare written comments and report cards.
  • Participate in team meetings, student support conversations, and grade-level planning.
  • Serves as an advisor, including leading advisory activities, supporting advisees' social-emotional growth and academic progress, and effectively communicating with parents.
  • Attend and help coordinate field trips, including overnight grade-level class trips.
  • Offer academic support during "zero hour" as needed.
  • Stay current in the field through professional development, reading, and engagement with new technologies and teaching practices.
  • Participates in parent-teacher conferences to discuss student progress and address any concerns.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head of Middle School.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Science or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience, ideally in an independent school setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in instructional design and active learning strategies.
  • Proficiency with educational technology and digital learning platforms.
  • Excellent classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Enthusiasm for working with middle school students and supporting their academic and personal growth.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
