Functional System Safety Engineer (Defense Vehicle Systems)
Onsite in Sterling Heights, MI
Estimated Pay Range: $50-$65 Per Hour
(This estimate represents the typical salary range for this position based on Government LCAT, education, experience, and other factors)
We are hiring a Functional System Safety Engineer in Sterling Heights, MI, to support advanced defense vehicle systems, embedded software safety, and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) initiatives for mission-critical military platforms. This role requires expertise in system safety engineering, hazard analysis, MIL-STD-882E compliance, MBSE methodologies, safety requirement traceability, software safety, and risk mitigation strategies supporting next-generation armored combat vehicle programs.
Responsibilities:
The Defense industry is rapidly embracing digital transformation, integrating advanced software and state-of-the-art features. This position requires a dynamic individual with System Safety and Model-Based Systems Engineering experience. The individual will collaborate with design teams to incorporate System Safety Engineering input into vehicle designs, including hardware and software systems. Responsibilities include completing safety analysis, proposing and executing mitigation through product validation during the program life cycle, creating and documenting safety work products, and submitting customer-required documents.
  • Evaluate customer safety requirements and determine vehicle/system compliance
  • Develop and support system and software architectures with integrated safety strategies
  • Conduct System Safety analyses and provide design change recommendations
  • Develop and maintain Hazard Tracking Systems (HTS), Hazard Logs, and Risk Registers
  • Perform and document Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA)
  • Develop safety requirements, ensuring definition, traceability, validation, and verification
  • Manage end-to-end traceability of hazard mitigations
  • Support the development of the System Specification Document
  • Develop and complete the Safety Contract Data Requirements List (CDRLs) to be submitted to the Customer
    Manage end-to-end traceability of the Hazard mitigations for the assigned systems
    Create and manage Human-System Interface databases, Hazard logs, Risk Registers, and manage Hazard tracking
  • Collaborate with Hardware and Software engineering teams to identify hazards and implement mitigation strategies
  • Conduct peer reviews of safety work products prior to release
  • Ensure compliance with contract requirements and applicable safety standards

Qualifications:
  • U.S. Citizenship is required by Federal Law, and you must be able to obtain a DoD Security Clearance
  • Bachelor's Degree in a System Safety-related discipline such as Systems Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Software, or related STEM concentration
  • 7+ years of System Safety engineering experience (fewer years considered with an advanced degree)
  • Experience developing: safety hazard analyses, Safety concepts and safety cases, Hazard mitigation strategies, Safety requirement traceability, and validation test cases
  • Experience working with safety standards: MIL-STD-882E, Joint Software Systems Safety Engineering Handbook (JSSSEH), ISO 26262, ARP-4761A
  • Experience developing with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using the System "V" model decomposition methodologies with CAMEO system modelers or similar Model-Based System modelers environment
  • Familiary with Team Center, JIRA, Confluence tools, DOORS, or other similar requirement management tools
  • Ability to meet Anthropometric Size Requirements for confined vehicle spaces
  • Must be able to work occasional evening and/or weekend overtime as required

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in a System Safety-related discipline such as Systems Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Software, or related STEM concentration
  • Experience with System, Logical, and Physical architecture in developing Safety strategy and safety mitigations
    Preferred experience in the Defense industry; relevant experience in Automotive or Aerospace System safety process and execution, launching designs into production.
    Experience with High Voltage and Autonomous Software embedded systems
    Experience in Human Factors/Ergonomics and System Safety in product design
    Familiarity with User-Centered Design (UCD) philosophy and approaches
    Understanding of Functional Failure Analysis
    Methodologies: Product development cycle, AGILE methodology, Systems Engineering V-model
