WHY THIS INTERNSHIP?
This is a real seat on the Engineering team, not busywork. You'll get exposure to AutoCAD, capital projects, and the design-and-construction process, while helping process permits, plans, and paperwork that keep the city running. We build the schedule around your classes
This is a part-time position, with a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week. The internship is subject to funding and need. There will be some flexibility with working hours and efforts will be made to accommodate class schedules if applicable.
The position will serve to assist the public works department and engineering division with various functions including administrative processing, permit issuance, plan processing, document management, field assignments, and as needed support. It is anticipated that there will exposure to AutoCAD and capital projects, in addition to the design and construction process where possible.
This recruitment will remain open until filled and may close at any time.

PUBLIC WORKS/ENGINEERING DIVISION
The Engineering Division ensures that private development projects comply with legal requirements and meet the City's high standards of quality, safety, and functionality. This is accomplished through the review of subdivision or parcel maps, grading, improvement, and other construction plans for conformance with the conditions of approval, Subdivision Map Act, geotechnical studies, water quality regulations, and all applicable codes and City Standards for new development projects.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
As an Engineering Intern, you will:
  • Process transportation permits and support encroachment permit issuance
  • Work hands-on with AutoCAD
  • Help residents and contractors at the public counter
  • Get out in the field on basic assignments
  • Support development plan review and design projects
  • Draft letters and reports
  • Pitch in on general admin and other duties as they come up

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Clear communicator - written, verbal, and graphic
  • Comfort with research and pulling together statistical info
  • A working grasp of engineering principles and practices
  • Ability to read and apply City Codes and Engineering Design Standards

  • Bonus: GIS or AutoCAD experience

Minimum Qualifications
Current enrollmentin undergraduate-level or graduate-level classes in a college or university degree program, in engineering, public administration, or related field.

Valid State of California Class C Operator's License.
Background Check/Physical Exam Individuals selected for employment will be required to take and pass a background check (fingerprinting) for all positions and medical exam for full time and permanent part time positions. The background check and medical examination are at City expense; and conducted by a law enforcement agency and physician designated by the City. Candidates who are currently working are urged not to resign until they have successfully passed the background check, physical examination and received a final offer letter.

Part-time employees must also contribute 1.45% of their gross earnings for Medicare coverage. No health or vacation leave benefits are provided to temporary part-time positions. Sick leave is accrued in accordance with the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Family Act of 2014.
