What is a human service intern?

Human Service Interns are students or recent graduates who work under supervision in social service settings, such as community organizations, nonprofits, or government agencies. Their primary role is to gain practical experience by assisting professionals in helping individuals and families access resources, support, and care. Interns may engage in tasks like client intake, case management, program development, and outreach. This hands-on experience is often required for completing a degree in human services or related fields and helps prepare them for careers in social work, counseling, or advocacy.

What types of projects or tasks can a human service intern expect to be involved with during their internship?

As a Human Service Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of tasks such as conducting client intake interviews, supporting case management activities, participating in community outreach, and helping organize workshops or group sessions. You may also have opportunities to shadow experienced professionals, attend staff meetings, and contribute to program development or evaluation. These experiences provide valuable exposure to direct client work and collaborative team environments, helping you build practical skills and a deeper understanding of the human services field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human service intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Service Intern, a foundational understanding of social work principles, basic counseling techniques, and a related academic background are essential. Familiarity with case management software, documentation protocols, and confidentiality regulations like HIPAA is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and effective communication help interns build trust and rapport with clients and colleagues. These skills are crucial for providing meaningful support, maintaining ethical standards, and contributing positively to human service organizations.

Zenar Corporation | Oak Creek, WI
Part-Time: Flexible schedule based on your availability.

This is a developmental opportunity for someone interested in building a long-term career in Human Resources and gaining exposure to the day-to-day responsibilities of an HR Generalist.
Working closely with the Sr. Human Resources Generalist and Director of Human Resources, you will receive mentorship, learn HR best practices, and progressively take on more responsibility throughout the internship.
This internship is designed to prepare you for a future full-time Human Resources Generalist opportunity.
What You'll Do
  • Assist with recruiting and onboarding, including scheduling interviews and pre-employment testing, preparing new hire materials, and supporting orientation.
  • Maintain employee records and assist with employee status, pay, department, and job title changes in the B2E HCM system.
  • Assist with benefits administration, including new hire enrollment, eligibility tracking, employee communications, and open enrollment preparation.
  • Maintain confidential employee documentation and develop an understanding of employment laws, company policies, and HR best practices.
  • Help coordinate safety training, maintain training records, and assist with OSHA-related documentation and required certifications.
  • Support day-to-day HR administration, including filing, reporting, employee communications, meeting coordination, and company events.
  • Participate in HR projects and process improvement initiatives.
  • Shadow and learn from experienced HR professionals across all major areas of Human Resources.

  • HRIS/HCM systems
  • Employment law and compliance
  • Safety administration
  • HR documentation and confidentiality
  • Policy interpretation
  • Project management and process improvement
Qualifications
Required:

Career Development
This is more than an internship—it's an opportunity to build a foundation for a career in Human Resources. You'll receive hands-on experience across multiple HR functions, work directly with experienced HR professionals, and gradually take on more responsibility as your skills develop.
As performance, competency, and business needs align, the successful intern may be considered for a full-time Human Resources Generalist position following the internship.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to move throughout office and manufacturing environments.
