The AFL-CIO Civil, Human, and Women's Rights Department creates, supports and implements the priorities and programs of the AFL-CIO from the civil, human and women's rights landscape.
The Coalitions and New Power Coordinator is responsible for coordinating engagement for the departmentβs civil, human and womenβs rights coalition- and young worker power-building efforts; engagement with AFL-CIO Constituency Groups, Civil & Human Rights Affiliates, coordinating department programs and activities; subject-matter research and analysis; and collaborating across AFL-CIO departments and completing assignments, as needed.Β
The Coalitions and New Power Coordinator works under the supervision of the Director of Civil, Human, and Women's Rights Department.
Descriptions of Duties
- Advance the department's ongoing work on civil, human and women's rights, voting rights and election protection, justice, the future of work and technology, civic engagement, political and field mobilization, education and training among other areas.
- Assist the department develop and implement programs and campaigns by leading coordination across AFL-CIO departments, affiliates, and partners.
- Lead coordination and engagement with key department stakeholders, including AFL-CIO affiliates and constituency groups, affiliate organizations, and committees.
- Advance coalition-building efforts for the department across allies and partners in labor, civil rights, human rights, women's rights, and young worker coalitions, among others.Β
- Provide project management support in executing the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil & Human Rights Conference, other events, convenings, and activations.
- Assist with concept, research and drafting support for the department's communications efforts, including movement-wide notices, newsletters, blogs, update and maintain web content, social media content, and other writing.
- Develop tools and resources that support department campaigns and programmatic goals.Β
- Develop and conduct workshops and training programs for staff of the AFL-CIO affiliates and constituency groups.Β
- Facilitate meetings, conference calls and webinars as needed.
- Assist with internal and external ad hoc reports as needed.
- Others duties as assigned.Β
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience with specific demonstrated experience in civil, human and women's rights advocacy and coalition campaigns.
- Minimum of 3-4 years' experience in issue campaign and program work with specific demonstrated experience in civil, human or women's rights campaigns, and relationships with civil, human, and women's rights organizations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of voting rights, justice issues, employee non-discrimination act, pay equity or other issues relevant to current civil, human, and women's rights issues.
- Prior experience and working knowledge of labor and social justice movements.
- Experience working with communities of color, women and the LGBTQ community.Β
- Demonstrated experience utilizing digital media to advance social justice causes.
- Demonstrated ability to assess critical civil, human, and women's rights issues and identify relevant information to support the organization.
- Excellent verbal, writing and research skills. Detail oriented. Prior communications and messaging experience preferred.Β
- Excellent computer skills including advanced research experience, proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
- Excellent tie management skills, including an ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.Β
- Prior campaign and/or project management experience preferred.Β
- Strong professional judgement, political acumen, and a self-motivated self-starter.
- Spanish language proficiency, a plus.
- Experience with Content Management Systems, a plus.
- Ability to travel and work extended hours, as needed.
