Job description

Build the Team That Builds the Firm.
At FBFK, we believe Human Resources is far more than policies, paperwork, and compliance. HR is responsible for attracting exceptional people, developing leaders, protecting the Firm, strengthening our culture, and delivering an outstanding employee experience.

We're looking for an experienced Human Resources Director who will serve as the operational leader of our people function and a trusted partner to the Chief Operating Officer.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll oversee our HR team, support attorneys and staff across multiple offices, ensure compliance in a complex multi-state environment, and help build systems and processes that allow the Firm to continue growing. Today the Firm includes more than 140 legal professionals and staff across offices in Texas and California.

We're not looking for someone to maintain the status quo. We're looking for someone who enjoys building.

What You'll Do

Partner with Leadership
Serve as a trusted advisor to the COO, to whom this role reports, as well as the CEO, shareholders, attorneys, and administrative leaders on all people-related matters. Build strong relationships across the Firm and provide practical, balanced guidance that supports both our employees and the long-term interests of the business.

Lead the Human Resources Function
Provide leadership for all HR operations, including employee relations, staff recruiting, onboarding, performance management, compensation, benefits administration, policy development, HRIS administration, compliance, and professional development. Develop and mentor our HR team while fostering a culture of responsiveness, accountability, collaboration, integrity, and outstanding service.

Deliver an Exceptional Employee Experience
Design and continuously improve every stage of the employee lifecycle from recruiting through onboarding, development, engagement, and retention.

Recruit Great People
Partner closely with attorneys to understand their staffing needs and oversee recruitment of talented legal support professionals who strengthen both our teams and our culture.

Build lasting relationships with attorneys so they view HR as a strategic partner rather than simply an administrative function.

Keep the Firm Protected
Maintain expert knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws, with particular expertise in California employment law.

Ensure our handbook, policies, employment practices, and HR processes remain current, compliant, and scalable as the Firm grows.

Build Better Systems
Own and optimize the Firm's HRIS and HR technology platforms.

Develop meaningful workforce metrics and reporting that help leadership make informed decisions regarding recruiting, retention, turnover, engagement, and organizational planning.

Provide Leadership for Key Programs
Participate in the planning and execution of the Firm's Summer Associate Program and support other leadership development, internship, and professional development initiatives.

Collaborate Across the Firm
Partner closely with Finance, Operations, IT, Marketing, and other administrative departments to ensure the Firm operates as one cohesive team.

What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Significant Human Resources leadership experience, preferably within a law firm or other professional services organization.
  • SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or comparable HR certification preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of California employment law and multi-state employment practices.
  • Experience leading and developing HR teams.
  • Expertise in recruiting, employee relations, compliance, performance management, compensation, benefits, and HRIS administration.
  • Excellent judgment, discretion, and problem-solving ability.
  • Outstanding communication skills and the ability to influence through credibility and relationships rather than authority alone.
  • A service mindset, balanced by sound business judgment.
  • Willingness to travel regularly between Firm offices.

The Kind of Leader Who Thrives Here
You'll be successful if you naturally build trust with people at every level of the organization.

You understand that attorneys are your internal clients, and you take pride in delivering responsive, high-quality service while also protecting the Firm's long-term interests.

You're compassionate without losing objectivity.

You use data to inform decisions, but never forget the human side of the business.

You're equally comfortable coaching a manager through a difficult employee conversation, advising leadership on organizational strategy, recruiting an exceptional candidate, updating a California employment policy, or jumping in to help your team when the workload demands it.

Most importantly, you're someone who sees opportunities to improve the organization and has the initiative to make them happen.

Why FBFK?
FBFK is a growing law firm with ambitious goals and a collaborative culture. We are an entrepreneurial, full-service business law firm with more than 140 legal professionals across offices in Texas and California, built on a people-first culture rooted in integrity, collaboration, and leadership at every level. That growth now has a name: FBFK 2.0, our plan to scale our people, platform, and capabilities, and this role sits in the center of it. Our administrative leadership team works as true partners, and HR has a meaningful seat at the table.

If you're looking for an opportunity to build, influence, and leave a lasting impact, not just manage a department, we'd love to talk with you.

Base Salary: $200,000–$225,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
Annual Performance Bonus: 20% target bonus, based on a combination of individual performance and Firm performance.

Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off, and other Firm-sponsored benefits.

Location: Plano, Texas, with regular travel to FBFK offices across Texas and California
