What is a hulett?

Huletts are large, electrically powered ore unloaders that were used primarily to unload bulk materials such as iron ore from lake freighters. Invented by George Hulett in the late 19th century, these machines feature a distinctive bucket arm designed to reach into the holds of ships and efficiently remove cargo. Huletts revolutionized cargo handling at ports along the Great Lakes, dramatically speeding up the unloading process and reducing manual labor. Though now mostly retired, they remain an important part of maritime and industrial history.
