Description

Position Summary

The Associate Controller will support the CFO in managing accounting operations and financial reporting for a government contracting environment. This role is responsible for supporting the monthly close process, financial reporting, government contract accounting, indirect cost rate management, billing, account reconciliations, and audit readiness.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience in government contract accounting, including a strong understanding of FAR cost principles, direct and indirect cost accounting, indirect rate structures, and government contract billing. Experience with government contracting ERP systems, particularly Deltek Costpoint, is highly desirable.

The Associate Controller will work closely with the CFO, program management, contracts, human resources, and operations teams to ensure accurate reporting, proper cost accumulation and allocation, timely billing, and compliance with applicable government contracting requirements.  This position will require a hybrid work schedule supporting the Rockville office. 



Key Responsibilities


Accounting Operations & Financial Close

Assist the CFO with day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting activities.

Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including preparation of journal entries and supporting documentation.

Prepare and review general ledger reconciliations, analyze account balances, and investigate significant or unusual variances.

Review accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and cash activity for accuracy and completeness.

Assist with monthly financial statements and management reporting packages.

Maintain organized, audit-ready accounting records.

Identify accounting issues, escalate significant matters to the CFO, and support improvements to accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

Government Contract Accounting & Compliance

Support an accounting system that accurately accumulates, classifies, and allocates costs to government contracts.

Apply applicable FAR cost principles when reviewing direct and indirect costs.

Assist with proper classification of direct and indirect costs and review costs for allowability, allocability, and reasonableness.

Support maintenance and monitoring of indirect cost pools and allocation bases, including fringe, overhead, and G&A.

Maintain documentation supporting cost allocations, indirect rates, and accounting practices.

Monitor contract-specific accounting and financial reporting requirements and support compliance with company policies and government contracting requirements.

Audit Support

Provide auditors with requested financial schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.

Assist with responses to audit findings, questions, and information requests.

Maintain organized audit files and ensure supporting documentation is complete and readily available.

Track, prioritize, and help resolve audit requests and open items.

Indirect Rate Management & Cost Accounting

Assist with preparation, maintenance, and periodic updates of provisional and forecasted indirect cost rates.

Monitor actual indirect expenses against budget and forecast.

Support monthly review of fringe, overhead, and G&A pools.

Provide cost accounting analysis to support rate management and financial planning.

Government Contract Billing & Accounts Receivable

Review billing transactions for accuracy and compliance with contract requirements.

Assist with preparation and review of invoices and billing backup documentation.

Reconcile billed, unbilled, accounts receivable, and contract revenue balances.

Monitor accounts receivable balances and assist with collection activities.

Support timely, accurate billing and documentation for government contracts.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis

Assist the CFO with the annual budgeting process.

Support monthly forecasts and financial projections.

Prepare budget-to-actual and forecast-to-actual variance analyses.

Develop financial reports and analysis to support management decision-making.

Team Collaboration & Leadership

Serve as a key resource for accounting staff and provide guidance on accounting procedures and government contract cost requirements.

Collaborate with program management, contracts, HR, operations, and other internal teams.

Provide timely financial information and support to internal stakeholders.

Perform other accounting and financial duties as assigned by the CFO.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably including 2-3 years in government contracting.
  • Experience in a senior accountant, accounting manager, associate controller, assistant controller, or comparable role.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting principles, and FAR cost principles applicable to government contractors.
  • Experience with direct and indirect cost accounting, including indirect cost pools, allocation bases, and rate structures.
  • Experience with government contract billing, accounts receivable, and audit support.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including financial analysis and account reconciliation experience.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Deltek Costpoint.
  • Familiarity with DFARS and government contract clauses related to financial management and accounting.
  • Experience with time-and-materials and fixed-price government contracts.
  • Accurate classification and allocation of direct and indirect costs.
