Job Description

The Metrology Technician is responsible for the calibration, verification, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, quality, and customer requirements. This role specializes in metrology fundamentals and advanced HPLC system troubleshooting, supporting analytical laboratories by availability of accurate, reliable, and compliant measurement systems. The position plays a critical role in maintaining data integrity, instrument uptime, and audit readiness.

Key Responsibilities:

Metrology & Calibration

  • Perform calibration, verification, and preventive maintenance of laboratory instruments including, but not limited to:
    • Balances, pipettes, thermometers, pressure gauges, timers, and volumetric devices, plate readers, Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID)
    • HPLC system components (pumps, detectors, autosamplers, column compartment)
  • Execute calibrations in accordance with documented SOPs, Equipment Qualification Protocols (EQPs), manufacturer specifications, ISO/IEC 17025, GMP, and GLP requirements
  • Maintain traceability to NIST or internationally recognized standards
  • Identify out-of-tolerance conditions, initiate investigations, and support impact assessments

HPLC Troubleshooting & Support

  • Diagnose and resolve HPLC performance issues including:
    • Flow instability, pressure anomalies, baseline noise/drift, detector contamination, carryover, and leak issues
  • Perform system suitability troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Support instrument qualifications (IQ/OQ/PQ) for HPLC systems
  • Collaborate with laboratory analysts to resolve recurring system performance issues and reduce downtime

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately complete calibration records, certificates, service logs, and deviation records
  • Ensure all activities are performed in compliance with ALCOA+ principles and data integrity expectations
  • Support internal and external audits (customer, regulatory, accreditation)
  • Review calibration data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance

Continuous Improvement & Collaboration

  • Identify trends in instrument failures and recommend corrective/preventive actions
  • Support improvements to metrology SOPs, EQPs, workflows, and preventive maintenance schedules
  • Interface with instrument vendors and service providers as needed
  • Promote a culture of quality, safety, and continuous improvement
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in chemistry, engineering, metrology, physical sciences, forensic science or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience in a regulated laboratory or metrology environment
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with HPLC systems (Waters, Agilent, or equivalent preferred)
  • Strong understanding of measurement traceability, and calibration principles
  • Working knowledge of GMP, GLP, ISO/IEC 17025, and data integrity requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting regulated pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, or analytical testing laboratories
  • Formal metrology or calibration training or certification
  • Experience with analytical equipment qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ)

    Position is full-time, Monday - Friday 9:00AM - 5:50PM. Candidates currently living within a commutable distance of San Diego, CA are encouraged to apply.

    Pay rage from $25/h to $31/h.
