What is housekeeping?

Housekeeping jobs are positions that ensure that a room, home, or office remains clean. In this career, you are responsible for cleaning your client’s toilets, bathtubs, floors, kitchens, and living spaces, emptying trash cans and recycling, and ensuring the general cleanliness of the location. Many housekeeping professionals work in the hotel and hospitality industry, where they perform housekeeping services for guests. They may replace towels, tidy the room, and clean rooms between guests.

What is housekeeping?

Housekeeping jobs involve cleaning, organizing, and maintaining private homes, hotels, hospitals, or other facilities to ensure a clean and comfortable environment. Housekeepers are responsible for tasks such as dusting, vacuuming, changing linens, doing laundry, and replenishing supplies. The role often requires attention to detail, time management skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Housekeepers may work full-time or part-time and sometimes have specialized duties depending on the type of facility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a housekeeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Housekeeper, you need attention to detail, time management, and knowledge of cleaning techniques and safety standards, usually supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, chemical handling, and, in some settings, hotel management systems is important. Reliability, discretion, and good communication skills help build trust and ensure guest satisfaction. These skills ensure cleanliness, safety, and a positive environment for clients or guests.

What are some common challenges faced by housekeeping staff and how can they be addressed?

Housekeeping staff often face challenges such as maintaining high productivity during peak occupancy, handling physically demanding tasks, and meeting strict cleanliness standards. Effective time management and clear communication with supervisors can help prioritize tasks and reduce stress. Additionally, using proper ergonomic techniques and having access to quality cleaning equipment can minimize the risk of injury and improve work efficiency. Many employers also provide training and support to help housekeepers adapt to new protocols and technologies.

Job description

Description
Summary:
Who We Are
White Lodging develops and operates a portfolio of award-winning premium hotels, rooftop bars, and restaurants in some of the country's most dynamic cities. We know that the hospitality business, like life, is about how you make people feel. That's where you come in. You'll help bring the virtue of hospitality to life while we create an environment that allows you to be your best self and grow.
We are hiring a Housekeeping Supervisor to support daily hotel housekeeping operations at one of our premium hotel properties. This is an ideal first step into hotel leadership for an experienced room attendant, housekeeper, or custodial professional ready to advance their hospitality career. As a Housekeeping Supervisor, you'll work side by side with your team - inspecting rooms, supporting room attendants, and helping ensure every guest room and public space meets the premium cleanliness standards our guests expect. If you're a housekeeper or room attendant looking for housekeeping supervisor jobs or an entry-level hotel leadership role with a company that genuinely invests in your growth, White Lodging is the place to build your career. With multiple hotel properties in each market, your path to Housekeeping Manager and beyond starts here.
Responsibilities:
What You'll Do
  • Support and coordinate daily hotel housekeeping operations - assisting with associate scheduling, hands-on training, and team support across guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces
  • Ensure all guest rooms, suites, public areas, and back-of-house spaces are cleaned, maintained, and presented to premium hotel cleanliness and brand compliance standards on every shift
  • Conduct regular room and property inspections to verify cleanliness, safety, and compliance with White Lodging standards and hotel brand protocols - identifying and resolving issues before they impact the guest experience
  • Assist in managing housekeeping inventory - helping monitor par levels and maintain adequate supplies, linens, and housekeeping equipment for uninterrupted daily operations
  • Respond promptly and professionally to guest inquiries and complaints regarding housekeeping services - resolving concerns with urgency and a genuine commitment to guest satisfaction
  • Foster a positive, team-oriented hotel housekeeping work environment by supporting and mentoring room attendants and modeling hospitality excellence on every shift

What You'll Bring
  • Prior hotel housekeeping, room attendant, or custodial services experience - required; previous hospitality or hotel housekeeping experience strongly preferred
  • A desire to step into a leadership role and develop your career in hotel housekeeping management - this is an entry-level supervisory position with a clear path to Housekeeping Manager
  • Working knowledge of hotel room cleaning techniques, floor care methods, and housekeeping best practices in a premium hotel environment
  • Strong communication skills and a natural ability to motivate, support, and direct a hotel housekeeping team in a fast-paced environment
  • High attention to detail and a genuine commitment to delivering consistent, guest-ready results across every room and public space on the property
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and varied shifts as hotel business needs require

Other information:

  • Unlimited employee referral bonuses
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off (PTO) with rollover
  • Complimentary wellness tools
  • Leadership development & tuition reimbursement
  • Discounts on hotel rooms, dining, and travel
  • Growth opportunities across multiple hotel properties in your market
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Full-time associates also receive:
    • Medical, dental, and vision insurance - starting day 1
    • Life and disability insurance
    • Paid parental leave
