Job Description Job Summary
The Bed Control Specialist is responsible for coordinating and managing the flow of patients through the facility by assigning patients to appropriate beds based on clinical needs, bed availability, and hospital policies. This role ensures efficient patient flow, effective communication among departments, and optimal bed utilization to support high-quality patient care. The Bed Control Specialist collaborates closely with nursing, clinical staff, and support departments to maintain real-time updates on bed availability and patient movements.
Essential Functions
  • Assigns patient beds based on clinical needs, bed availability, and hospital policies, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
  • Coordinates patient admissions, discharges, and intra-hospital transfers to optimize bed utilization and maintain efficient patient flow.
  • Monitors real-time bed availability using hospital bed management systems and provides accurate updates on census and occupancy status.
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership, the admissions department, and physicians to prioritize bed assignments during high census periods or emergencies.
  • Communicates with clinical and support departments, such as housekeeping and patient transport, to ensure timely bed preparation and readiness.
  • Facilitates patient transfers to specialized care units (e.g., ICU, telemetry, maternity) based on clinical criteria and physician orders.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation of bed assignments and patient movements in the hospital’s electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Supports compliance with infection control policies by coordinating isolation or special room needs for patients.
  • Identifies and resolves bed availability issues promptly, coordinating with the House Supervisor and nursing leadership to address capacity challenges.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Healthcare Administration or related field preferred
  • 1-3 years of experience in a hospital or healthcare setting required
  • 2-4 years of experience in hospital bed management, patient admissions, or related healthcare setting preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of hospital operations and bed management practices.
  • Proficiency in using hospital electronic health record (EHR) and bed management systems.
