Familiarity with home security systems, basic maintenance tools, and pet care routines is often expected. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right opportunity based on their skills and interests.

What are some common challenges house sitters face, and how can they be managed effectively?

House sitters often encounter challenges such as managing unfamiliar home systems, handling unexpected maintenance issues, and adapting to varied homeowner expectations. Clear communication with homeowners about their routines, emergency contacts, and house rules is essential for a smooth experience. Being proactive—such as conducting a thorough walkthrough at the start and keeping detailed notes—helps address potential issues quickly. Flexibility and problem-solving skills are valuable, particularly when caring for pets or responding to unforeseen events like appliance malfunctions.

What is house sitting?

House sitting is a service where an individual stays in someone’s home while the owner is away, to take care of the property and often pets. Duties can include watering plants, collecting mail, performing basic maintenance, and ensuring the home appears lived-in to deter potential intruders. House sitters may stay for a few days or several months, depending on the owner's needs. This arrangement provides homeowners with peace of mind and can offer house sitters free accommodation or a small payment.

About Our Family

We are a family on the cusp of the empty nest stage, with our three daughters heading off to various colleges and beginning exciting new chapters of their lives. Our home is a blend of warmth, activity, travel, and transition, as both of us periodically work from home and enjoy occasional travel throughout the year.

We live in a historic home on Indianapolis' north side that is full of character, charm, and the thoughtful upkeep that naturally comes with an older property. Day-to-day life involves coordinating with trusted vendors, staying ahead of household maintenance and projects, and ensuring everything runs smoothly and calmly behind the scenes.

Our household also includes a friendly golden retriever and two cats, who are very much part of the family. Above all, we value privacy, discretion, positivity, and a peaceful home environment that feels organized, welcoming, and well cared for. We're hoping to find someone who is not only professional and detail-oriented, but also fun, friendly, upbeat, and genuinely enjoys becoming a positive presence within a family's daily rhythm.

Who You Are / What We're Looking For

Proactive problem-solver: You anticipate needs and resolve issues before they become urgent.

Independent and assertive: Comfortable taking initiative and managing tasks with minimal supervision.

Positive and lighthearted: Bring a sense of humor to your work while staying focused and professional.

Warm and personable: Friendly and kind, while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

Clear communicator: Keep us informed, especially when we're traveling, so we always know things are on track.

Detail-oriented and thoughtful: Help free up our mental bandwidth by anticipating details and thinking through solutions on our behalf.

  • Coordinate occasionally with our vacation home's house manager as needed

  • Daily resets including dishes, vacuuming high-traffic areas, light tidying
  • Prep home for weekly cleaners
  • Seasonal decoration swaps and takedown
  • Coordinate donation drop-offs
  • Change batteries, light bulbs, and smoke detectors as needed
  • Deep cleaning of refrigerator and oven as needed
  • Clean humidifiers and air purifiers
  • Break down and recycle delivery boxes

  • Wash dog beds monthly

Pet Care

  • Monitor and maintain pet food supply
  • Coordinate dog care when family travels (option to act as pet/house sitter if preferred)

Vehicle Management

  • Drop off and pick up vehicles for service; manage loaner cars
  • Track registration and insurance for family's vehicles and boats

Guest House & Outdoor Spaces

  • Stock indoor and outdoor beverage fridges, including guest house kitchen, for meetings and events/hosting as needed
  • Bring in outdoor cushions at end of season and tidy spaces for guests
