What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Hourly YouTube Video Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Hourly YouTube Video Editor, you need proficiency in video editing principles, storytelling, and a good understanding of YouTube content trends, often supported by a portfolio of past work. Familiarity with editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve, as well as basic graphic design and audio editing tools, is typically required. Strong time management, creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to take feedback make an editor stand out. These skills are crucial for producing engaging, high-quality videos that attract viewers and help channels grow efficiently.

What is the 80 20 rule in video editing?

The 80/20 rule in video editing suggests that roughly 80% of the final video results come from 20% of the editing effort, emphasizing the importance of focusing on key scenes and essential adjustments. As an hourly YouTube video editor, prioritizing impactful edits and trimming unnecessary footage can improve efficiency and video quality. Understanding this principle helps optimize workflow and deliver engaging content more effectively.

How to find YouTube video editing jobs?

To find YouTube video editing jobs, search on freelance platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer, which often list remote editing opportunities. Building a portfolio of your work, mastering editing tools like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro, and highlighting relevant skills can improve your chances of securing such roles.

What does an Hourly YouTube Video Editor do?

An Hourly YouTube Video Editor is responsible for editing video content specifically for YouTube channels, getting paid based on the number of hours they work. Their tasks include cutting and assembling footage, adding transitions, effects, music, and graphics, and ensuring videos match the desired style and branding. They may also optimize videos for YouTube by creating engaging thumbnails, adding captions, and following platform guidelines. Effective editors collaborate with content creators to produce polished and engaging videos that attract and retain viewers.

What is the difference between Hourly Youtube Video Editor vs Freelance Video Editor?

AspectHourly Youtube Video EditorFreelance Video Editor
Work EnvironmentTypically works for a specific YouTube creator or channel, often remotelyWorks independently for various clients, often remotely
CredentialsUsually no formal certification required, but familiarity with YouTube platform and editing software is essentialSimilar; skills and portfolio matter more than formal credentials
Industry UsageCommonly employed by content creators and media companies focusing on YouTubeUsed across multiple industries including marketing, entertainment, and corporate videos

While both roles involve video editing skills, the Hourly Youtube Video Editor typically works on YouTube-specific content for a single creator or channel, often paid hourly. In contrast, a Freelance Video Editor works independently with multiple clients across various industries, offering more flexibility but less consistent hourly pay. Both roles require strong editing skills and familiarity with editing software, but their work environments and client relationships differ.

What are some common challenges Hourly YouTube Video Editors face when working with multiple clients or channels?

Hourly YouTube Video Editors often manage projects for several clients or channels at once, which can lead to tight deadlines and shifting creative expectations. Balancing each client's unique style, branding requirements, and preferred turnaround times requires strong organizational and communication skills. Editors must also stay updated on YouTube's evolving best practices, such as optimal video length, engaging thumbnails, and copyright-safe content. Clear workflows and regular feedback help ensure quality and consistency across projects.

How much do YouTube editors make per hour?

Hourly YouTube video editors typically earn between $15 and $50 per hour, depending on experience, skill level, and project complexity. Freelance editors may set their rates, while those employed by companies often have standardized pay scales. Proficiency with editing software like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro can influence earning potential.

Is AI replacing video editors?

AI technology is increasingly used to assist video editors by automating tasks like editing, color correction, and captioning, but it does not fully replace the creative and decision-making skills of a human video editor. Human editors are still essential for storytelling, creative input, and nuanced editing that AI cannot replicate. Many video editing roles now require proficiency with editing software and understanding of AI tools as complementary assets.

Job description

At Range, we're building towards a world where anyone can live the financial life they imagine for themselves. If that sounds like a mission you want to be a part of, let's create it together.
We're building AI-powered wealth management. Investments, taxes, retirement, estate planning, all in one platform instead of scattered across different advisors and apps. We're backed by Google's Gradient Ventures, Cathay Innovation, Scale Venture Partners, and more. We're growing fast while still small enough that everyone's work is visible and impactful.
About the role
Range is seeking a Video Editor to own the production of video content that grows Range's social audience - led by Instagram. This is an editor-first role: you'll spend most of your day in Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Descript turning raw footage into content people actually watch. Speed and quality aren't a tradeoff here - we expect both. You'll take what's already working and level it up every single day, one video at a time.
This position is based in New York City. Employees hired for this role will work in office Monday-Friday, including from our NYC studio. If you are not currently located in this area, your willingness to relocate will be a contingency for employment.
What you'll do with us
  • Edit fast without sacrificing quality: Turn around polished content daily across short-form (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube), medium-form (3-5 min explainers), and long-form (YouTube, podcast episodes, webinars).
  • Own end-to-end production: Shoot, edit, and publish - from talking-head Reels to studio podcast episodes. You'll run our NYC studio setup (camera, lighting, audio) and make every speaker look and sound their best.
  • Level up what's working: We have a proven content engine and a clear strategy. Your job is execution - test new formats and hooks, study retention and performance data, iterate fast, and scale winning formats.
  • Move at AI speed: Use AI-assisted workflows (Claude Cowork, Premiere, and whatever's next) to produce faster without cutting corners. You should be the person who finds the new tool before we do.
  • Grow our social audience, led by Instagram: Make Instagram the channel where Range breaks through - content built for explosive growth - with LinkedIn, YouTube, and TikTok behind it. You'll partner with our content team on thumbnails, captions, and format choices.
  • Own your metrics: Drive measurable growth in followers, views, watch time, shares, and saves from video content.

What will set you apart
  • 5+ years editing video across short, medium, and long formats, with in-house experience at a company (not solely agency or freelance) - you understand what it means to own outcomes, not just deliverables.
  • Deep fluency in Premiere Pro and After Effects; experience with social media editing and AI-assisted editing workflows.
  • 2+ years of motion graphics animation experience.
  • 2+ years shooting video (camera, lighting, audio) - studio and run-and-gun.
  • A portfolio that proves you can make engaging, high-quality content fast.
  • You execute with little to no guidance - we don't have bandwidth for handholding.
  • You think like a marketer first, creative second - you care more about driving business results than building a portfolio.

Nice to haves
  • Podcast production experience (multi-cam, remote recording, studio workflows).
  • Comfortable on camera or coaching others to shine on camera.
  • Familiarity with wealth management, personal finance, or B2C content.
  • Deep curiosity about video trends and social algorithms - you know what's hitting before everyone else does.
  • Zero ego.
Benefits
  • Comprehensive health coverage: Medical, dental and vision
  • 401k plan
  • Technology allowance
  • PTO
  • Top of Market Pay
  • Paid parental leave
  • In-person team & company events

Range is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace. We are committed to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status. As a company, we are committed to designing products, building a culture, and supporting a team that reflects the diverse population we serve.
