This is a hourly position with a comprehensive benefits package offered by Sioux Manufacturing Corporation (SMC).


SMC-paid benefits for employees include:

401(k) Retirement Plan

    • Starting on first day of employment you will immediately get on the 401(k) plan along with:

    • In addition, SMC offers a company match of up to 5%


We also offer relocation assistance for those coming from 50 miles or greater to employment at SMC.


Position Summary

The Production Set-up Machinist works under guidance from their Engineering Manager and the Machinist/Engineering Technician to perform machine set-ups, train machine operators, direct the production of machining operations, and provide machine shop support to all departments of SMC.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision, direction, and assistance to the staff in the machining area to meet customer delivery schedules 
  • Assist with developing and writing programming for CNC machines to produce parts to drawing requirements using available equipment.
  • Evaluate current procedures, tooling, and programming to maximize efficiencies and minimize scrap within the machining areas.
  • Perform start-up and shutdown of equipment consistent with company safety procedures and OSHA requirements.
  • Use full range of precision measuring and gauging tools to perform inspection before start of job and during operation to ensure conformance with drawing or specification requirements.
  • Determine appropriate tooling requirements to be used for specific jobs.
  • Load tooling at the start of a job, evaluate efficiency of tooling and make changes as needed.
  • Inspect tools to ensure they are in optimum condition and change dull or broken tools as necessary.
  • Operate a variety of metal working machines to produce parts to meet drawing and specification requirements.
  • Determine if machines are operating correctly.
  • Provide training for the staff in the machine area.
  • Assist with and create programming to properly inspect parts with the CMM machine.


Additional Responsibilities 

  • Collaborate with other staff such as Engineers, Technicians, Quality Assurance and Maintenance on equipment and tooling calibration, rebuilding and repair.
  • Provide engineering support and assist in training to other departments.
  • Clean up machine tool operation scrap and discard appropriately.
  • Assist in the evaluation of employee performance regarding CNC work training progress.
  • Ensure a clean and safe working area.
  • Help maintain CNC machines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production or precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Ability to adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle quickly and repeatedly to exact positions.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.


Computer Skills

  • Basic computer knowledge required (i.e., email and word processing experience).
  • Experience using PC workstations, Individual email accounts, and mobile applications for communication and business operations.
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, database).
  • Cloud-based & communication (Microsoft Teams, Skype, Zoom, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of drafting / CNC programming software applications.


Education and/or Experience

Required: Associate's degree in manufacturing/ technical programming; OR completion of a full apprenticeship program

Preferred: At least one year of experience as a fully qualified machinist
