What is an hourly Orton Gillingham tutor?

An Hourly Orton Gillingham tutor is a specialist who provides individualized, multisensory reading instruction to students with dyslexia or other reading difficulties, using the Orton Gillingham approach. These tutors are typically paid by the hour and work with students one-on-one or in small groups to improve reading, spelling, and writing skills. The Orton Gillingham method is structured, sequential, and tailored to each student's needs, making it highly effective for learners who struggle with traditional classroom instruction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly Orton Gillingham tutor?

To thrive as an Hourly Orton-Gillingham instructor, you need a solid foundation in literacy instruction, a deep understanding of dyslexia, and formal Orton-Gillingham training or certification. Familiarity with structured literacy programs, progress monitoring tools, and educational assessment systems is typically required. Outstanding patience, communication skills, and the ability to tailor instruction to individual student needs are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure effective, evidence-based support for struggling readers and foster meaningful learning outcomes.
