Hourly Lighting Board Operator information

What does an hourly lighting board operator do?

An Hourly Lighting Board Operator is responsible for controlling and operating the lighting console during live events, performances, or productions. They follow lighting cues provided by the lighting designer or stage manager to ensure the correct lighting effects are executed at the right moments. Their duties may include programming lighting cues, maintaining equipment, and troubleshooting any technical issues that arise during a show. This role is usually paid by the hour and is common in theater, concerts, and broadcast settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly lighting board operator?

To thrive as an Hourly Lighting Board Operator, you generally need a solid understanding of theatrical lighting principles, experience with lighting design, and familiarity with stage production environments. Proficiency with lighting control consoles (such as ETC or GrandMA boards), DMX systems, and basic electrical safety are typically required, and some employers may prefer certifications in entertainment technology or related fields. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work well under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial to ensure seamless execution of lighting cues, maintain safety, and support the overall success of live productions.

Hourly lighting board operators often work under tight time constraints and must adapt quickly to last-minute changes during live events. Coordinating cues with stage managers, performers, and other technical staff requires strong communication and attention to detail. Additionally, operators may encounter unexpected technical issues with lighting equipment, so troubleshooting skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure are essential. The role can also involve physically demanding tasks and irregular hours, particularly during event setups and breakdowns.
