Can you make a living as an hourly life drawing model?

Hourly life drawing models can earn income through short-term or freelance work, often paid per session or hour. While some models work regularly and supplement their income with other jobs, it is generally challenging to rely solely on modeling for a full-time living due to variable demand and pay rates. Success depends on experience, reputation, and the ability to secure consistent bookings in art schools, studios, or private sessions.

How much do hourly life drawing models get paid?

Hourly life drawing models typically earn between $15 and $30 per hour, depending on the location, venue, and experience. Pay rates can vary based on the setting, with professional art schools and studios often offering higher rates, and models may need to provide their own supplies or meet specific requirements.

This role will work cross-functionally with Sales, Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, R&D, and Project Engineering to support the successful development and on-time launch of new aerospace products and programs.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on, highly motivated mechanical engineer with strong technical ownership, excellent communication skills, and the potential to grow within the organization. This person should be comfortable leading complex design projects, mentoring junior engineers, supporting customers, and driving continuous improvement of current product lines through robust design, manufacturability, supply chain readiness, and field issue resolution.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop product and component designs, CAD models/MBDs, and engineering documentation in accordance with company, industry, and customer requirements.
  • Create and review assembly drawings, detail drawings, models, and specifications to ensure accuracy, completeness, manufacturability, and compliance with customer and industry standards.
  • Initiate internal Engineering workflow such as customer drawing evaluation, internal drawing creation and revision, through internal PLM environment and collaborate cross functionally to ensure on time completion of the workflow
  • Apply Design for Manufacturability and Design for Supply Chain principles when developing new products or improving existing designs.
  • Serve as the design subject matter expert for assigned products or programs and support the full New Product Introduction process from concept through production launch.
  • Lead design reviews, DFMEA activities, failure analysis, root-cause investigations, corrective actions, and qualification test planning.
  • Support Sales and Marketing by providing technical product knowledge, participating in customer discussions, and representing the company in customer or industry meetings when needed.
  • Support AS9100 and internal quality system requirements by ensuring design and development activities are properly documented and controlled.
  • Partner with Trade Compliance to ensure commercialized products are properly classified in accordance with applicable U.S. export control laws and regulations.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible mechanical design engineering experience, preferably in aerospace, defense, or another highly regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with sheet metal CAD modeling, FEA stress analysis, parametric design and Model based definitions.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawings, specifications, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design documentation requirements.
  • Experience developing mechanical components or assemblies from concept through prototype, qualification, and production release.
  • Proficient knowledge of design reviews, DFMEA, failure analysis, qualification testing, and root-cause problem solving.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple projects and priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong customer focus, sense of urgency, and ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with CATIA V5/3DEXPERIENCE or similar PLM/PDM software for configuration management, engineering change control, and workflow management.
  • Experience with silicone, elastomer, seal, clamps, or other aerospace hardware design and testing.
  • Working knowledge of reverse engineering of aerospace components, including dimensional inspection, material evaluation, drawing creation, and design validation.
  • Experience supporting supplier development, cost reduction, value engineering, or production process improvement.
