Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Under minimal supervision from the Director of Language and Hospitality Services, provides onsite Spanish-English interpretations for Patients, Healthcare Providers, and other ancillary Medical Center staff for onsite appointments (including inpatient rounds, family meetings, and educational teachings) with or without interpretation equipment, as well as interpretation via video and phone as needed. Skilled at interpreting in the consecutive and simultaneous modes, as well as sight translation. Completes written translations of medical records, correspondence, educational materials, and other documents in a timely and accurate manner. Rotates with other onsite interpreters to manage administrative duties, including but not limited to: correspondence with clinics and hospital units, answering department phone to assist callers, entering assignments into department database, scheduling vendors, and dispatching assignments in an equitable manner. Assists with departmental projects and education/outreach to hospitals and clinics. Contributes beyond specific job duties to ensure the smooth delivery of Language Services and Office of the Patient Experience programs.
Salary Range: $27.50-44.81/hr

  • Completion of a 40-hour Healthcare Interpreter training program.
  • At least 3 years of experience interpreting in a healthcare setting, including experience working with diverse cultural and socio-economic populations.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and translate medical terminology.
  • For spoken language interpreters: National healthcare interpreter certification (CHI or CMI) or highest applicable credential through CCHI or NBCMI.
  • For ASL interpreters: Certification through NAD-RID.
  • Translator certification (when applicable by language) through ATA.
  • Achieves a minimum score of 80%-90% on a UCLA Health-approved language proficiency assessment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Spanish-speaking ability.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency (highly preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field such as science, healthcare, or human services.
  • Additional or advanced certifications such as CHI, CMI, ATA, or NAD-RID (as applicable).

As a condition of employment, the final candidate who accepts an offer of employment will be required to disclose if they have been subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct; or have filed an appeal of a finding of substantiated misconduct with a previous employer.
