Job description
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring an ALS Electronics Installation and Fabrication Technologist within the Engineering division. This position will provide technical support to engineering staff engaged in the design, development, fabrication, installation, testing, operation, and maintenance of electrical and electronic systems, equipment, and experimental apparatus within the Engineering Division.
While assigned to the Advanced Light Source (ALS), under general supervision, perform complex technical support activities in the field of electronics fabrication, installation, testing, and maintenance within an accelerator environment. Responsibilities include layout, fabrication, assembly, troubleshooting, and installation of a broad variety of electronic hardware and systems, including chassis fabrication, wiring, cabling, printed circuit board loading, instrumentation, and equipment installation. Perform measurements, diagnostics, and calculations necessary to achieve desired operational and technical results.
This role works closely with engineers, physicists, technicians, and operations personnel to support accelerator systems, experimental equipment, controls, instrumentation, and related infrastructure. The position requires technical judgment, strong troubleshooting skills, and adherence to Laboratory safety and quality standards in a highly specialized research environment.
You will:
- Fabricate and/or install complex electronics hardware including chassis, instruments, printed circuit boards, cables, wiring harnesses, equipment racks and consoles, and control and instrumentation cross-connect / inter-connect cabling systems.
- Support accelerator operations, shutdown activities, upgrades, and maintenance projects.
- Respond to operational support needs and participate in troubleshooting activities affecting accelerator or beamline systems.
- Operate hand, power and machine tools of the trade.
- Read and interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, and component layout diagrams.
- Follow generalized written or verbal instructions. Select appropriate components, packaging enclosures and manufacturing techniques and procedures. Implement appropriate codes and standards associated with the trade.
- Install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic systems and equipment in laboratory, shop, and accelerator environments.
- Use standard electronic test equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, network analyzers, and related diagnostic tools.
- Identify equipment malfunctions and implement corrective actions with minimal supervision.
- Perform measurements, calculations, and operational checks necessary to verify system functionality and performance.
- Ensure work is performed in compliance with Laboratory policies, electrical safety requirements, engineering standards, and applicable procedures.
- Participate in work planning, hazard analysis, job safety reviews, and integrated safety management activities.
- Interact with engineers, designers and electronics coordinators on matters relating to finished product design, technical performance and documentation criteria. Provide input to cost estimates and production/installation scheduling.
- Perform all duties in compliance with applicable Environment, Health and Safety rules and regulations as described in LBL Pub-3000 and other related documents. Proactively promote and participate in matters relating to safety and environmentally sensitive work practices.
- Participate in various formal ES&H training activities as required by specific duties and responsibilities. Support Lab-wide and Engineering Division Diversity-in-the-Workplace goals. Be sensitive to the needs of all employees and contribute to the establishment and maintenance of a nurturing work environment.
We are looking for:
- Minimum of 3 years of related experience working in the electronics field.
- Substantial understanding of electronics theory, electro-mechanical, scientific principles, and mathematics. Knowledge and ability to use complex test equipment, diagnostic routines and procedures and appropriate hand, and power tools of the trade.
- Ability to correctly interpret complex schematics, and assembly, calibration, maintenance, and operating manuals.
- Ability to safely operate a variety of electronics test equipment including oscilloscopes, digital and analog multimeters, function generators and pulse generators.
- Work experience performing general troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of complex electronics.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment to successfully accomplish assignments.
- General knowledge of equipment design procedures and techniques.
- General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases, and word processors.
- Color vision sufficient to discern wiring and component color codes, and safety-related colored signs, lamps and warning devices.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.).
Desired skills/knowledge:
- Provide on-the-job training to lower-level or less experienced staff on matters relating to design layout, fabrication and installation techniques and procedures, and quality and workmanship codes and standards.
- Experience supporting accelerator, beamline, scientific, industrial, or research equipment.
- Familiarity with accelerator controls, instrumentation systems, interlock systems, or data acquisition equipment.
- Experience working in a national laboratory, research institution, university, or similarly complex technical environment.
- Experience with rack integration, cable management, and equipment installation in operational facilities.
- Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and quality assurance practices.
