Job description

Role Summary
The Electrical Engineer – Power Innovation is a mid-level position focused on supporting the commissioning, startup, and system turnover of power generation and energy systems. This role provides electrical engineering expertise throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring systems are tested, verified, and ready for operational use. The position involves collaboration with various teams and hands-on field support to guarantee safe, reliable, and efficient system startup.

Responsibilities

  • Provide electrical engineering support during commissioning, startup, and system turnover phases.
  • Lead and assist in electrical commissioning activities, including testing, verification, and troubleshooting of switchgear, transformers, generators, and control systems.
  • Validate power system studies such as short circuit, coordination, and arc flash, ensuring alignment with as-built conditions prior to energization.
  • Execute and oversee electrical testing activities, including insulation resistance, hi-pot, relay testing, and functional verification.
  • Support pre-commissioning tasks such as loop checks, calibration, and protection system verification.
  • Participate in FAT, SAT, PSSR, and RFSU processes to ensure systems meet startup and turnover requirements.
  • Collaborate with project management, construction, commissioning, controls, and operations teams to ensure system readiness.
  • Conduct fieldwork supporting testing, troubleshooting, and issue resolution during commissioning and startup activities.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE standards, and safety protocols.
  • Assist in the integration and validation of BESS and power generation systems, including system testing.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive commissioning documentation such as inspection test records, test reports, redlines, and turnover packages.
  • Identify, track, and resolve punch list items prior to system handover.
  • Coordinate with vendors for installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Promote continuous improvement by developing standardized processes and tools for commissioning activities.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior engineers.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned aligned with project needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited) or a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology with a P.E. license.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, or commissioning within power generation, industrial, or related industries.
  • Working knowledge of electrical power systems and equipment, including switchgear, transformers, and generators.
  • Experience with electrical drawings, control systems, and commissioning processes.
  • Proficiency with power system analysis tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, or MATLAB.
  • Experience with protection relay testing and electrical test equipment such as Omicron, Doble, or Megger.
  • Strong understanding of protection coordination, arc flash analysis, and grid integration.
  • Knowledge of DCS/SCADA systems and electrical system integration.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues in the field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in industrial environments following safety regulations.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Availability to work in a field-based setting supporting active construction and commissioning activities.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
