The City of Aspen is hiring the following Aspen Recreation Center (intermittent) position:

Position Summary: Assists in the planning and delivery of Aspen City Camp youth recreation programs by providing supervision, leading activities, and fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for children ages 5-14. Assignments may include summer camps, after-school programs, school break camps, and other youth programming as needed.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the general supervision of the Camp Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions:
Camp Counselor I
Performs entry-level recreation support work assisting with the supervision, engagement, and care of children participating in Aspen City Camp programs. Assists Camp Counselor II staff and the Camp Supervisor with implementing daily activities, maintaining a safe and positive environment, and supporting children ages 5-14 in day camp and afterschool programs.
Camp Counselor II
Performs responsible recreation work providing supervision, program implementation, and support for Aspen City Camp programs. Independently supervises groups of children, leads daily activities, communicates with parents and staff, and assists with coordinating program operations to provide a safe, inclusive, and engaging experience for children ages 5-14 in day camp and afterschool programs.
Responsibilities Across All Roles:
Program Facilitation & Child Supervision
• Supervises and or/ assists with the supervision of groups of children participating in day camp and afterschool programs.
• Provides care and supervision for children ages 5-14 years old.
• Organizes and/or assists with indoor and outdoor activities, including games, arts and crafts, projects, and other recreational activities.
• Ensures activity spaces are clean, safe, and ready for daily programming.
• Actively participates in and assists children with preparing for group activities such as swimming, climbing, ice skating, hiking, sledding, etc.
• Creates a fun, safe, and educational experience for children by providing interactive activities, maintaining a positive environment, and encouraging participation.
• Communicates clearly and effectively with parents during drop-off and pick-up times and when addressing behavior concerns. Maintains clear communication with fellow camp counselors and the Camp Director regarding problems, concerns, and ideas.
• Ensures all children are properly signed in and out of the program each day.
• Assists with facility clean-up duties, including cleaning tables and vacuuming at the end of the day.
• Creates an inclusive and welcoming environment that supports children of varying abilities, backgrounds, and interests.
Training
• Attends 15 hours of state-approved training throughout each year.
Coordination
• Assists with creating monthly afterschool and camp schedules.
• Coordinates daily activities during program hours.
• Delegates tasks as appropriate and ensures adequate staffing is in place for field trips and all activities.
Administrative
• Assists with maintaining records for each child enrolled in Aspen City Day Camp.
• Assists with administrative duties as needed.

Minimum Requirements:
Education:
• Camp Counselor I: Must be at least 16 years of age at the time of hire and enrolled in high school.
• Camp Counselor II: 18 years and older and High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience:
Camp Counselor I: No experience or less than 3 months (460 hours) of full-time or equivalent part-time satisfactory and verifiable work experience with school-aged kids.
Camp Counselor II: Two years of college training and 6 months of satisfactory and verifiable full time or equivalent part-time, paid or volunteer experience in care and supervision of four or more school aged children.
Technical Knowledge: Demonstrates the ability to use basic computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email.
Licenses & Certifications: When a driver's license or commercial driver's license is required for the position, must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date. Have a current CPR-First Aid certification, have attended and be able to provide certificate of completion for Standard Precautions and Child Abuse Reporter Training or be able to obtain within 30 day of start date.
Desirable Qualifications:
• Current CPR-First Aid
NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
NOTE: This position requires successful completion of a pre-employment criminal background screening, including a Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) fingerprint-based background check, and Colorado Child Abuse and Neglect Registry (TRAILS). Employment is contingent upon successful completion of these screenings.
Position Type and Work Hours
• Intermittent Monday through Friday, less than 29 hours per week.

• Evenings/Weekends: Occasionally (monthly) will be required depending on department needs and special projects.
Work Environment
• Indoors: Gym and cafeteria space at the Aspen Elementary School.
• Outdoors/Off-Site: Playgrounds at and near recreation facilities, hiking trails, rafting locations, Glenwood Caverns (including within the caves), and other recreation program destinations. Meetings, trainings, and conferences at a variety of city facilities and areas.
