Hourly 3D Printer Operator information

What does an hourly 3D printer operator do?

An Hourly 3D Printer Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining 3D printers to produce prototypes or parts based on digital models. They prepare the printer by loading materials, calibrating the machine, and monitoring the printing process to ensure quality and accuracy. Operators also perform post-processing tasks like cleaning, finishing, and inspecting printed items. Their role often includes troubleshooting equipment issues and keeping detailed records of production runs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly 3D printer operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Hourly 3D Printer Operator, you need a solid understanding of 3D printing processes, basic mechanical aptitude, and experience with CAD software or 3D modeling tools, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with specific 3D printer brands, slicing software (like Cura or PrusaSlicer), and basic troubleshooting techniques is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective time management help operators excel in maintaining print quality and meeting production deadlines. These skills ensure efficient operation, minimize errors, and contribute to consistent, high-quality output in manufacturing or prototyping environments.

What are some common challenges faced by hourly 3D printer operators, and how can they be addressed?

Hourly 3D printer operators often encounter challenges such as printer malfunctions, material jams, and maintaining print quality over long shifts. Staying proactive with routine maintenance, closely monitoring print progress, and promptly troubleshooting errors are essential strategies for minimizing downtime. Good communication with team members, especially engineers or supervisors, can also help quickly resolve technical issues. Emphasizing attention to detail and continuous learning about new printing techniques can further enhance efficiency and output quality in this role.

What is the difference between Hourly 3D Printer Operator vs 3D Printing Technician?

Work EnvironmentManufacturing or workshop settings, operating 3D printersLaboratories, production facilities, or design studios
Job FocusOperating and maintaining 3D printers, basic troubleshootingDesign, setup, advanced troubleshooting, and quality control

While both roles involve working with 3D printers, the Hourly 3D Printer Operator primarily focuses on operating and maintaining printers, often with minimal technical training. In contrast, the 3D Printing Technician typically has more technical skills, including troubleshooting and quality assurance, often requiring certifications or an associate degree. Both roles are essential in manufacturing and design industries, but the Technician role generally involves more complex tasks and technical knowledge.

Do you enjoy working hands‑on with machines, tools, and materials to create high‑quality parts? Are you detail‑oriented and energized by technical craftsmanship in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment? Ready to support innovative production workflows using CNC machining and advanced 3D printing? If so, we’d love to meet you!

Formative 3D is seeking a CNC Operator to support post‑processing operations and fabricate custom fixtures and jigs that enhance our production workflow. This role blends hands‑on machining with technical precision and close collaboration across production and engineering teams.

You’ll operate CNC and robotic milling equipment to post‑process large‑format 3D‑printed furniture components while contributing to continuous improvements in efficiency, quality, and shop operations.

Compensation range: $28 - $33/hour

Key Responsibilities

You will work closely with production and engineering teams to:

  • Operate 3‑axis CNC routers and 6‑axis robotic milling machines to post‑process 3D‑printed components and produce fixtures and jigs
  • Interpret technical drawings and CAD files to set up and execute milling operations
  • Perform post‑processing tasks on printed parts, including trimming, sanding, and surface finishing
  • Inspect machined and printed parts for dimensional accuracy and quality standards
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot CNC equipment and tooling
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to improve fixture design and workflow efficiency
  • Assist with general shop duties, including material preparation, organization, and equipment upkeep

What You Bring

  • 2+ years of experience operating CNC milling machines in a production or prototyping environment
  • Proficiency in reading technical drawings and using measurement tools such as calipers and micrometers
  • Familiarity with G‑code, CAM software, and CNC setup procedures (Fusion 360 preferred)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
  • Experience with post‑processing plastics or composite materials (preferred)
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment
  • Comfort lifting up to 50 lbs and working in a hands‑on shop setting
  • Experience with 3D printing or furniture assembly—or a strong desire to learn—is a plus

What We Offer:

  • Compensation commensurate with experience
  • Full suite of healthcare benefits, including medical, dental, and vision
  • Competitive PTO plans
  • Competitive retirement plans
