As a Header Operator, you will play a vital role in our manufacturing operations, operating sophisticated heading machinery to produce aerospace-grade fasteners that meet the most stringent quality standards in the industry. Your expertise will directly contribute to the production of components used in commercial aircraft, military applications, and space exploration vehicles.
Role Overview
The Header Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining hot and/or cold heading machines to manufacture precision fasteners and components according to exact specifications. This position requires a thorough understanding of heading processes, metallurgy principles, quality control procedures, and the ability to work with various materials including titanium, stainless steel, aluminum alloys, and specialty aerospace materials.
Essential Responsibilities
- Set up and operate single-die and multi-die cold heading machines to produce aerospace fasteners.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, work orders, and specifications.
- Perform machine adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and product quality.
- Conduct first article, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, and thread gauges.
- Monitor production output and make process adjustments to minimize scrap and downtime.
- Replace tooling, dies, punches, and cut-off knives as required.
- Troubleshoot machine and tooling issues to maintain efficient production.
- Record production data, inspection results, and machine maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with AS9100, ISO 9001, customer specifications, and company quality procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment following all safety regulations.
- Work closely with Quality, Engineering, Tooling, and Production teams to improve manufacturing processes.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
- 3+ years of experience operating or setting up cold heading machines in the aerospace or fastener manufacturing industry.
- Strong knowledge of cold heading processes, tooling, and machine setup.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Experience using precision inspection equipment.
- Understanding of aerospace quality requirements and documentation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience manufacturing aerospace fasteners.
- Knowledge of AS9100 quality management systems.
- Familiarity with SPC (Statistical Process Control).
- Experience with National, Waterbury, SACMA, or similar heading equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
- Perform repetitive hand movements and machine adjustments.
- Work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to machinery, noise, lubricants, and metal materials while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
