Assistant Nurse Manager - Family Birth Center
Join Our Family Birth Center Team as an Assistant Nurse Manager at Randall Children's Hospital!

Within the Family Birth Center at Randall Children's Hospital, the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) plays a critical leadership role in ensuring safe, high-quality care for birthing persons, newborns, and families across the perinatal continuum, including antepartum, labor & delivery, operative birth, and postpartum recovery.ย
The ANM leads by example-partnering with the Nurse Manager to oversee daily operations while supporting a culture of compassionate, family-centered care, clinical excellence, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This role is integral to sustaining a high-risk, high-acuity environment within one of the region's referral centers, working closely with OB providers, midwives, neonatology, anesthesia, and the Level IV NICU.ย

Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Provide leadership support to the Nurse Manager in overseeing FBC daily operations, including labor, delivery, triage, and postpartum care.
- Manage staffing and scheduling in alignment with AWHONN staffing guidelines and patient acuity needs.
- Support coordination of patient flow across triage, LDR rooms, ORs, and postpartum units.
- Serve as the operational leader in the Nurse Manager's absence.
Clinical Practice & Quality
- Ensure delivery of safe, evidence-based care across the perinatal continuum, including high-risk obstetrics and surgical/operative births.
- Promote adherence to Legacy standards of care, RN Scope & Practice, and patient assessment and transfer protocols.
- Lead and support quality and safety initiatives, including maternal/newborn outcomes, fetal monitoring practices, and emergency readiness.
- Foster clinical excellence through competency validation (e.g., NRP, fetal monitoring, STABLE) and ongoing education.
Staff Development & Engagement
- Oversee orientation, onboarding, and competency development for FBC nursing staff.
- Mentor and develop staff, including charge nurses and emerging leaders.
- Support participation in resuscitation, preceptorship, and residency programs.
- Promote an inclusive, respectful environment where all team members are valued.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Collaborate with physicians, midwives, anesthesia, neonatology, and ancillary teams to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.
- Support implementation of TeamBirth or similar shared decision-making models to enhance communication and patient engagement.
- Partner with NICU teams to ensure seamless care for newborns requiring higher levels of support.
Patient & Family Experience
- Champion family-centered, culturally responsive care for birthing persons and their support systems.
- Ensure a supportive environment that balances high clinical acuity with comfort, safety, and dignity.
- Support patient education and engagement throughout the birth experience.
Administrative & Financial Management
- Assist with budget monitoring, productivity, and resource utilization.
- Support workflow optimization and process improvement across the Family Birth Center.
- ย Contribute to regulatory readiness and compliance with applicable standards.
Provides support and managerial assistance to the Nurse Manager in overseeing daily unit operations, including:
Staffing and scheduling
Orientation and onboarding
Education and competency assessment
Budget monitoring
Establishing and maintaining patient care standards
Promoting evidence-based practice
Implementing quality improvement initiatives
- Serves as the primary resource for staff and the organization in the Manager's absence
- Reports directly to the Nurse Manager and assists in overall department management
Education
- Academic degree in nursing (BSN or MSN/MN) required.
- MSN/MN preferred.
Experience
- Clinical expertise in obstetrics, labor & delivery, or Family Birth Center setting required.
- Minimum two years of leadership experience (charge nurse, preceptor, or formal leadership role).
- Experience in high-risk obstetrics or regional referral center preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong clinical knowledge in perinatal nursing, including high-risk labor management and newborn stabilization.
- Demonstrated ability to lead in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across interdisciplinary teams.
- Proven ability to support staff engagement, development, and inclusive team culture.
- Strong operational skills in staffing, workflow, and resource management.
Certifications
- Current RN license.ย
- BLS and NRP required.
- ACLS, STABLE, and advanced fetal monitoring (or ability to obtain within required timeframe).
- Experience:
- Relevant clinical nursing experience at proficient to expert level of practice required with two years supervisory, leadership, or charge nurse experience in health care.
- Experience in Women's Services/LDRP preferred.
Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making and time-management skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of operations, including staffing, scheduling, productivity management, workflow planning and staff development.
- Proficient in use of PC-based computer software including Microsoft Office applications.
- Current applicable state RN license required.
- Current BLS for Provider certification from the American Heart Association required.
