Responsibilities
- The Painter performs skilled painting, wall-covering, surface-preparation, and related finish work throughout hospital buildings, clinics, and other healthcare facilities.
- This position supports the maintenance and appearance of patient-care, administrative, clinical, and public areas while minimizing disruption to hospital operations.
- The Painter works with minimal supervision and is responsible for completing assigned work safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable healthcare, infection-prevention, environmental, and occupational-safety requirements.
- Surface Preparation and Painting
- Prepares ceilings, walls, doors, door frames, trim, millwork, and other surfaces for the application of primers, paints, stains, varnishes, and protective coatings.
- Removes loose paint, wall covering, adhesive, rust, dirt, grease, and other surface contaminants using appropriate preparation methods.
- Patches, sands, cleans, primes, and otherwise prepares surfaces to achieve a professional and durable finish.
- Applies primers and finish coatings using brushes, rollers, airless spray equipment, and other approved application methods.
- Matches existing paint colors and finishes when performing repairs or touch-up work.
- Prepares and paints exterior surfaces, including concrete, masonry, metal, wood, and other building materials.
- Stains new millwork and prepares surfaces for the application of varnish or other clear finishes.
- Caulks windows, doors, wall penetrations, joints, and other openings as required.
- Wall Covering and Interior Finishes
- Measures, cuts, patterns, and installs new wall covering.
- Removes and replaces damaged wall covering.
- Installs and repairs vinyl wall protection, corner guards, wall base, and similar interior finish materials.
- Repairs plaster walls and ceilings.
- Repairs gypsum-board walls and ceilings, including patching holes, repairing joints, applying joint compound, sanding, and preparing repaired areas for finishing.
- Performs minor repairs to painted and finished surfaces resulting from equipment movement, construction, maintenance activities, or normal wear.
- Safely erects, uses, relocates, and removes portable scaffolding, ladders, lifts, and other approved access equipment.
- Operates painting and surface-preparation equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and departmental safety procedures.
- Cleans, maintains, and properly stores brushes, rollers, spray equipment, tools, ladders, scaffolding, and other assigned equipment.
- Maintains clean, orderly, and secure work areas.
- Protects floors, furniture, medical equipment, doors, fixtures, and adjacent surfaces from damage, dust, paint, and overspray.
- Removes waste materials and returns affected spaces to a clean and operational condition upon completion of work.
- Maintains an appropriate inventory of paints, coatings, wall coverings, adhesives, caulks, solvents, and related supplies.
- Properly labels, stores, uses, and disposes of paints, solvents, chemicals, and hazardous materials in accordance with safety and environmental requirements.
- Performs work in patient rooms, treatment areas, laboratories, offices, corridors, mechanical spaces, and other occupied or restricted healthcare environments.
- Coordinates work with clinical departments, nursing staff, Facilities Management leadership, Infection Prevention, Environmental Services, and other affected departments.
- Uses barriers, containment measures, negative-air equipment, dust-control methods, and other infection-prevention precautions when required.
- Complies with Infection Control Risk Assessment requirements and construction or maintenance-related infection-control procedures.
- Selects and uses low-odor, low-VOC, or other healthcare-approved materials when required.
- Minimizes noise, odor, dust, and disruption to patients, visitors, and hospital operations.
- Maintains awareness of patient privacy, confidentiality, dignity, and safety while working in occupied patient-care areas.
- Immediately reports unsafe conditions, water intrusion, damaged building components, suspected mold, fire-barrier penetrations, or other conditions requiring additional corrective action.
