What is a hose master?

Hose Masters are skilled professionals who specialize in manufacturing, assembling, maintaining, and repairing industrial hoses and flexible metal hose assemblies. They ensure that hoses meet specific safety and performance standards for industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, and manufacturing. Hose Masters may work with a variety of materials and fittings, using specialized tools to cut, crimp, and test hoses for leaks or defects. Their expertise helps prevent equipment failures and ensures the safe transport of liquids and gases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hose master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hose Master, you need a solid understanding of hose assembly, mechanical aptitude, and knowledge of safety regulations, often supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, crimping tools, and measuring instruments is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial to ensure safe, high-quality hose fabrication and reliable performance in industrial applications.

What are some common challenges hose masters face in maintaining safety and quality standards on the job?

Hose Masters frequently work in environments where maintaining both safety and quality standards can be challenging due to factors like high-pressure systems, exposure to hazardous materials, and the need for precise installations. Staying up-to-date with safety protocols and industry regulations is crucial to prevent accidents and ensure product reliability. Additionally, troubleshooting issues during hose assembly or installation requires close attention to detail and effective communication with team members. Adapting to evolving customer requirements while meeting strict deadlines is also a common aspect of the role.

Master Fabricator

Join a family-owned & operated company with 42+ years of stability & growth with industry-leading products that are 100% manufactured in the USA!

Headquarters in Cleveland OH with regional facilities in Houston TX, Atlanta GA, and Reno NV, Hose Master is North America's largest manufacturer of flexible metal hose and metal bellows expansion joints, with over 450,000 square feet of manufacturing space.

Founded in 1982, Hose Master has established itself as the first choice in metal hose and metal expansion joints for industrial markets including power generation, refining and petrochemical, steel, pulp and paper, chemical processing, marine and offshore, liquid terminals, and bulk material handling.

We are passionate about providing customer-driven designs, manufacturing excellence, and superior service. Innovation and application expertise are the cornerstones of our identity and the fuel for our growth.

The Master Fabricator is responsible for the fabrication and assembly of expansion joints, custom fittings, and machine structures to print. This position requires mastery of multiple welding disciplines, including TIG and MIG on stainless steel, carbon steel, and nickel alloy materials, as well as precision fabrication in accordance with ASME Section IX and ASME B31.1/B31.3 piping codes. The role demands proficiency in welding across various joint types (groove and fillet) and material thicknesses, along with the ability to operate weld positioners in both 1G and 2G rotated positions. The Master Fabricator functions as a technical authority within the department, setting the standard for quality, workmanship, and process discipline while ensuring all products meet or exceed Hose Master's EJMA, ASME, PED, and ISO quality requirements.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Fabricate complete assemblies from start to finish, including non-standard products, fixtures, and machine structures.
  • Perform TIG and MIG welding on stainless steel, carbon steel, and dissimilar alloys.
  • Execute groove and fillet welds in all positions.
  • Perform thin-to-thin, thin-to-thick, and thick-to-thick welding operations with precision and structural integrity.
  • Read and interpret prints, weld symbols, and geometric tolerances.
  • Comprehend and apply Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) to ensure compliance and repeatability.
  • Inspect components prior to fit-up; ensure surfaces and joints meet tolerance and cleanliness standards.
  • Perform dry fit-ups, tacking, and attachment welds (bellows to fittings or pipe).
  • Evaluate assemblies for optimal order of operations and execute accordingly.
  • Set up and utilize fixtures, jigs, and rigging for complex and/or large assemblies.
  • Communicate effectively with management, engineering, and production teams to efficiently process work orders.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment consistent with 5S principles.
  • React to change productively and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of Hose Master's weld training program with valid TIG and MIG certifications.
  • Deep understanding of heat management, distortion control, and weld sequencing.
  • Ability to weld out of position with consistent quality.
  • Skilled in the use of measuring tools (tape measure, pi tapes, calipers, micrometers, angle gauges).
  • Proficient with grinding, cutting, torch, and plasma equipment.
  • Strong math, blueprint reading, and spatial reasoning skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and mentor less experienced fabricators.
  • Ability to operate lift trucks and overhead cranes safely.
  • Nickel alloy welding experience.
  • Must have experience with using weld positioners in both the 1G and 2G rotated positions (a lot of field welders are not proficient with using these).
  • ASME Section IX certified welder on CST, Stainless, and Nickel alloy base materials of both fillet and groove type joints with both the TIG and MIG welding processes.
  • Must have experience fabricating in accordance with the quality requirements of ASME B31.1 and B31.3 piping codes.
