Job Title:

Horizontal Direction Drilling (HDD) Locator

Job Summary:

Essel is looking for a detail-oriented and safety-conscious Horizontal Direction Drilling Locator to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for accurately locating underground utilities and guiding the horizontal directional drilling operations to ensure precise installation and avoid utility conflicts. This position requires strong knowledge of utility locating practices, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with drilling crews.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Use specialized equipment to detect and mark underground utilities prior to and during horizontal directional drilling operations.
  • Collaborate closely with drill operators and project managers to provide real-time utility location data and guidance.
  • Read and interpret project plans, utility maps, and as-built drawings.
  • Maintain accurate records of utility locations and any discrepancies encountered during drilling.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and project specifications.
  • Assist in troubleshooting utility conflicts and provide solutions to minimize project disruptions.
  • Provide clear communication to the crew regarding underground obstacles and safety concerns.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in utility locating, especially related to horizontal directional drilling operations preferred.
  • Proficient with utility locating equipment such as electromagnetic locators and ground-penetrating radar (GPR).
  • Strong understanding of underground utility systems (electric, gas, water, telecom, fiber).
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
