What is a home stylist?

Home Stylists are professionals who specialize in enhancing the appearance and functionality of living spaces. They work with clients to select furniture, décor, colors, and layouts that reflect the client's taste and lifestyle. Home Stylists can provide advice for a single room or an entire home, often using existing items or suggesting new purchases to achieve a cohesive look. Their goal is to create aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and practical spaces tailored to clients' needs.

How does a home stylist typically collaborate with clients and other professionals during a project?

A Home Stylist works closely with clients to understand their aesthetic preferences, lifestyle needs, and budget constraints before developing design concepts. Throughout a project, the Home Stylist often coordinates with other professionals such as interior designers, contractors, and vendors to source furnishings, arrange installations, and ensure cohesive execution of the vision. Regular communication and in-person or virtual meetings with clients are common to review progress, make adjustments, and address any concerns. This collaborative approach ensures client satisfaction and smooth project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a home stylist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Home Stylist, you need a strong eye for design, knowledge of interior decorating principles, and often a background in interior design or a related field. Familiarity with design software like SketchUp or AutoCAD, as well as knowledge of current trends and sourcing platforms, is typically required. Exceptional communication, creativity, and client management skills help build trust and deliver tailored solutions. These abilities are crucial for creating visually appealing, functional spaces that meet client needs and enhance their living environments.

What is the difference between Home Stylist vs Interior Decorator?

AspectHome StylistInterior Decorator
CredentialsOften no formal certification, but some may have design or styling coursesMay hold certifications or degrees in interior design or decorating
Work EnvironmentResidential spaces, showrooms, photo shootsResidential and commercial interior spaces
Industry UsageFashioning home aesthetics, staging for photos or salesEnhancing interior spaces for functionality and style

Home stylists focus on creating appealing visual aesthetics for homes, often for staging or photo shoots, with minimal emphasis on structural changes. Interior decorators typically work on enhancing the overall interior design, including color schemes, furniture, and decor, often with formal training. Both roles aim to improve living spaces but differ in scope and approach.

How do I become a home stylist?

To become a home stylist, you typically need a strong sense of interior design, creativity, and knowledge of decorating principles. Gaining experience through internships, building a portfolio, and developing skills with design tools like mood boards or software can help. Some roles may require certifications or training in interior design or related fields.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
