Major Duties and Responsibilities
This position is responsible for maintaining the Right of Ways for the Urban Forestry & Beautification Division.
  • Remove dirt and debris from roads.
  • Carries tools, mixes concrete, sweeps street gutters; shovels gravel, snow, dirt, sand, rakes leaves, and cuts brush.
  • Picks up litter and debris from right of way; cleans up spills by placing sand on them; removes trash and litter from curbs and gutters; rakes leaves and uses blowers; cuts grass.
  • Directs traffic around the work site during road repairs, and spreads seeds, fertilizers, and mulch during landscaping.
  • Loads and unloads trucks with proper materials.
  • Maintains landscaping, mowing, planting, and seeding. Delivers concessions, chemicals, and miscellaneous equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment. Picks up garbage and debris as assigned.
  • Cleans truck and other equipment.
  • Applies fertilizer; plants grass and shrubbery.
  • Assists in the cleaning and maintenance of the fleet yard.
  • Removes trash from park grounds and buildings; cleans restrooms.
  • Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations and work processes, and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques utilized in the performance of grounds maintenance and landscaping activities.
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the performance of grounds maintenance and landscaping activities.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation of assigned equipment.
  • Skill in problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Skill in the operation of hand tools and other assigned equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Must possess a valid driver's license. This position is required to supervise state inmate's labor. Employee must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally six months but may be altered.

Retirement Plan
The Columbus Consolidated Government offers a defined benefit retirement plan to eligible employees who work in General Government and in Public Safety. Employees in the pension plan must meet both age and years of service requirements to qualify for retirement.
