Job description

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides operational oversight for administrative systems and policies associated with the operation and management of student clubs and organizations
  • Provides direction for the recognition process, advisor training, club advising and support services, marketing, communications, resources, and programming
  • Partners with university and community stakeholders to plan and implement events and initiatives that support student recruitment and engagement in clubs and organizations
  • Collaborates with department leadership in short- and long-term strategic planning to ensure healthy engagement, student retention and well-being across campus populations, and promote an inclusive and diverse university community
  • Hires, trains and supervises graduate students, student supervisors, and student staff to support the successful operation of club and organization activities
  • Maintains oversight of event planning and risk management to ensure student club/organization compliance with the student code of conduct and all other university policies
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of student development and campus engagement

The Assistant Director for Leadership Development, Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement, is a critical resource for students seeking transformational competency development and opportunities to explore their individual leadership styles.


Reporting to the Associate Director, Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, this position supports the office's growing leadership development functions by planning and executing small and large-scale programs and offering one-on-one and group coaching designed to cultivate strength-based competency growth, develop unique leadership styles, and deepen commitment to active and engaged citizenship. This position also serves as a liaison between the Center and student organizations and works, in collaboration with the Associate Director, to develop strategic pathways for students to identify key leadership opportunities within the division of student affairs and beyond.


The Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement believes RIT students are innovators who will make a positive impact in their communities. Transformative community experiences serve as a cornerstone of effective leadership development and enable students to explore and advance their own purposeful trajectory. Through programs offered by the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, students enhance their leadership skills and explore civic identities while engaging in thoughtful interactions that examine new perspectives.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily operations and or support in the planning, execution, and evaluation of select on and off-campus leadership development programs and other on-going engagement initiatives. Ensure that priorities are reflected in programming budgets and oversee the financial stewardship of area resources. Contribute to the departments strategic planning and visioning to ensure that programs are highlighting and prioritizing shared values of the department, university, and its collaborators. Effectively supervise undergraduate and graduate staff members to support area operations and goals. Complete performance evaluations and mid-semester evaluations for staff members annually.

  • Serve as a campus resource and internal expert on strengths-based competency development, modern leadership theories and models including new research, applications, and diverse perspectives. Lead and participate in campus-wide discussions about these topics. Engage with students, staff, faculty, and alumni and establish meaningful working relationships with key stakeholders. Alongside the Associate Director, position RIT as a national leader in student engagement and leadership through meeting and exceeding national benchmarking standards.

  • Provide oversight and administration in the development and implementation of an on-demand training curriculum inclusive of various leadership theories and applicable skill building catered to individual students, clubs, organizations, and departments within the division. Collaborate with internal partners to design and deliver trainings in support of their ranging functions.

  • Create networking and mentorship opportunities between students, staff, and faculty. Engage in community support networks on a local and national level. Serve on appropriate committees to support programs and students that address the needs of this area.

  • Create and deliver training programs on topics related to leadership development/education as well as community/civic engagement as needed (or requested).

  • Serve as an active member of the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement's professional team supporting CLCE programs, events, and strategic priorities as appropriate (includes night and weekend commitments at various times throughout the academic year).


Specialized Skills:

  • Knowledge of student development, leadership education, and/or community engagement theories, pedagogies, and "promising practices" with regard to competency development

  • Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of constituencies within and outside of the university setting

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with student leaders

  • Demonstrated ability in designing, implementing, and evaluating programming related to the student experience

  • Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in complex situations with competing priorities
