Job description

Job Title:HVDC & FACTS Planning and Integration Engineer - Technical LeaderLocation:Knoxville, TN, Remote/Home BasedJob Summary and Description:

The Technical Leader in this position will perform research and development work on the planning and integration of HVDC and advanced transmission technologies, including different configurations of HVDC grid interconnections.

The role will involve the development and implementation of strategies, methodologies, software tools, and simulation models for the evaluation and planning of complex transmission projects involving the use of these technologies.

The successful candidate will join a growing team performing R&D on the integration of HVDC and power electronic based devices for transmission systems, focused on tackling planning and operation challenges and practical solutions from concept to actual design and implementation.

Some of the tasks related to HVDC and FACTS research include:

  • Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.

  • Applies technical expertise and has full knowledge of other related disciplines.

  • Develops technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.

  • Ability to apply technical knowledge to industry issues and gain input on needs from members/stakeholders and identify current and emerging technical issues.

  • Maintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas.

  • Supports senior staff in developing research or services opportunities of value to EPRI members that fit EPRI's mission and capabilities. This will include solving customer problems, producing insights and information vital to the members, and delivering information in a manner that members and customers can and will apply.

  • Provides assistance to the EPRI sales staff in Member Services and EPRI International.

  • Supports senior staff in preparing proposals, technical publications, and delivering presentations.

  • Broaden technical expertise and interface with national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, and academia and research organizations.

  • Communicates strategies and results, written and verbal, to program members, potential members and external stakeholders through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops and conferences.

  • Works independently on technical activities with limited direct supervision

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required.

  • Graduate Degree or PhD in technical field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 8+ years of research and development project and promotional experience, including development of advanced concepts for internal research or equivalent experience.

  • Shows technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives using creative imaginative solutions.

  • Experience in performing and/or managing research activities.

  • Incumbents must be able to exercise judgment, diligence, and attention to detail and demonstrate an aptitude for carrying out responsible technical assignments.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Increasing technical depth/breadth to become a subject matter expert

Additional information

In this position, the Technical Leader will work closely with the area research manager and other EPRI technical staff to manage and support a range of challenging projects in the transmission planning and operations area.

Specific knowledge and experience in the following areas is required:

  • Expertise in HVDC converters and transmission technologies

  • Experience with analysis, modeling and studies related to integration, planning and operation issues of HVDC systems

  • Experience with planning and interconnection standards for HVDC is desired.

  • Knowledge of FACTS devices and advanced emerging technologies for transmission systems

  • Expertise in power system analysis tools such as PSS/E, DigSilent, PSLF, PSCAD, or similar tools.

  • General computer skills with Microsoft Office

  • Strong teamwork ability

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently and effectively in support of multiple concurrent projects

  • Experience working in transmission grid operations or planning

  • Self-motivated, quick learner with an ability to adapt to changes in work scope.

The salary range for this position is $140,000 USD to $153,000 USD annually.This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.This role is eligible to participate in EPRI's annual incentive program.
