What is the difference between Home Based Polymer Chemistry vs Laboratory Polymer Chemist?

AspectHome Based Polymer ChemistryLaboratory Polymer Chemist
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote, home-based setupOn-site in a laboratory setting
Required CredentialsDegree in Chemistry or related field, possibly certifications in polymer scienceDegree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field; certifications may vary
Job ResponsibilitiesResearch, formulation, and testing of polymers remotelyExperimental research, synthesis, and analysis in lab
Industry UsageEmerging in freelance or consulting rolesTraditional industry roles in manufacturing, R&D

Home Based Polymer Chemistry involves remote research and formulation work, often requiring a strong educational background in chemistry. In contrast, Laboratory Polymer Chemists work directly in labs performing experimental synthesis and testing. Both roles require similar credentials but differ mainly in work environment and daily tasks.

Job description

Description
Verdox, Inc. is dedicated to reversing climate change through the development and deployment of advanced technology. The company’s proprietary electro-swing process, developed at MIT, enables carbon dioxide and other acid gases to be captured with up to 80% less energy and 70% less cost than conventional approaches. Verdox is backed by institutional investors and based in Boston. See verdox.com for additional information on our technology and our vision.
Verdox seeks a Polymer Chemist to join our R&D team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and synthesize polymers with specific electrochemical and physico-chemical properties
  • Examine and develop diverse polymer chemistry, employing various types of
polymerizations, polymer backbones, and purification techniques
  • Focus on developing and optimizing synthetic protocols for cost-effective polymer
synthesis and purification at the multi-kilogram scale and beyond
  • Perform and interpret the physical, chemical, and electrochemical characterization of monomers and polymers
  • Oversee quality control of polymer products
  • Use and maintain elements of the chemistry R&D infrastructure

Skills Knowledge and Expertise
  • PhD in Synthetic/Organic/Polymer Chemistry (or equivalent), with focus on polymer synthesis, purification and physical characterization. Some industry experience is preferred
  • Strong polymer chemistry experience, including the design and preparation of novel polymer structures
  • Advanced organic synthesis skills – ability to design and synthesize monomers and polymers with desired properties. This includes multistep synthesis, Schlenk line and air-free techniques.
  • Characterization – chemical: NMR, GPC, GC/LC-MS, MALDI-TOF, FT-IR, UV-Vis, etc.; physical: SEM, TEM, AFM, tensile strength
  • Purification techniques – experience with various polymer workup and purification techniques, including at the kilogram scale
  • Scale-up (preferred) – some experience in gram to kilogram scale synthesis
  • Electrochemistry experience (preferred) – some experience in organic electrochemistry and electrochemical techniques
  • ChemDraw, NMR analysis software, Excel, MATLAB (or equivalent)
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
