Job description

EnviroScience, Inc.Part time Variable

The Timber Rattlesnake Monitor will be responsible for monitoring and relocating Timber Rattlesnakes during construction and land management activities. This role involves working outdoors in potentially rugged terrain, collecting data, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. The ideal candidate will possess a Type 3 Scientific Collector Permit for Timber Rattlesnake Construction Monitoring issued by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Timber Rattlesnake Monitoring

  • Working on active construction sites to clear work areas of Timber Rattlesnakes prior to the start of construction activities each day and proactively searching the site throughout the workday.

  • Capturing and moving any Timber Rattlesnakes that may interfere with work activities while adhering to scientific collector permit conditions.

Data Collection & Reporting

  • Record field observations, GPS locations, and environmental conditions.

  • Submit detailed reports on rattlesnake locations and habitat use

  • Maintain accurate and organized field notes and data records.

Environmental Compliance

  • Provide on-site guidance and education to construction personnel on rattlesnake safety.

  • Ensure Timber Rattlesnakes are not intentionally harmed during construction activities.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Type 3 Scientific Collector Permit for Timber Rattlesnake Construction Monitoring issued by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working in herpetological monitoring.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Herpetology, or related field.

  • 3-5 years of experience specifically in Timber Rattlesnake monitoring and proficiency in handling venomous snakes.

  • Experience conducting field surveys and monitoring species in challenging outdoor conditions.

  • Adequate computer skills for completing daily reports (Word, Excel, etc.)

Desired Skills:

  • Strong field navigation skills, including the use of GPS and mapping software.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain excellent professional relationships with construction contractors, client representatives, and EnviroScience managers.

  • Ability to work independently and in team environments in varying weather conditions and terrains.

  • Self-motivated, organized, and capable of working independently and as part of a team.

  • Flexibility to travel for fieldwork overnight for extended periods of time.

Work Environment

This candidate will need to collaborate effectively with the Terrestrial Operatons Team. This candidate needs to be able to complete project work independently, with minimal supervision. Work assignments will include 5-6 consecutive days per week in the outdoors in all kinds of weather, and often in remote and challenging locations. Standard workday is 10-12 hours per day and overnight travel for extended periods of time is required to complete field work in this role.

This position is a remote role, meaning employees will work remotely. Standard office and field equipment will be provided to work in the office and at home - a dedicated space at home to work is also required. Uninterrupted home-based internet is a must in your home to attend and host video calls, along with a minimum bandwidth speed of 20 mbps.

Working Conditions:

  • Conduct fieldwork April-Octoner, including in adverse weather and rough terrain.

Physical Requirements:

  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 lbs.

  • Communication with others to exchange information. Must be able to see, read, write, and speak.

  • Occasional standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching

  • Working outdoors in all kinds of weather.

  • Walking for periods of time including maneuvering uneven, uphill, and downhill terrain

  • Working on active construction sites

Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to travel overnight as needed.

  • Estimated % of Overnight travel: 75-100%; varies with fluctuation in workload and work location
